This is the part of multi-agent systems I think people underestimate.

Imagine every handoff preserves 85% of the context that actually matters.

One handoff: 85%.

Four handoffs across five agents:

0.85⁴ ≈ 52%.

The numbers here are illustrative, not measured Grok Bot reliability. But the mechanism matters.

Adding another agent can make each individual step more specialized while making the whole system less reliable.

A researcher forgets to label one claim unverified.

The writer assumes it's true.

The reviewer receives a polished sentence instead of the uncertainty that existed two agents ago.

By the end, nobody technically made a huge mistake.

The mistake happened between them.

That's why I like the HANDOFF idea here more than almost any fancy multi-agent architecture:

verified → unverified → skipped → next

It forces uncertainty to travel with the work instead of disappearing every time responsibility changes hands.

Everyone is racing to build teams of 10, 20, 50 AI agents.

I think the better question is:

How many times can information change hands before nobody remembers what was uncertain at the beginning?
