BREAKING: Secretary of State Marco Rubio provides waiver for @PEPFAR to provide HIV medications to poor nations.

The Trump administration had thrown the foreign aid program into chaos this week by putting it on a 90-day "pause" along with all other foreign aid. People with HIV were not even allowed to pick up their medications.

Here is a memo that went out today:

Emergency Humanitarian Waiver to Foreign Assistance Pause
To: All implementing U.S.government agencies, partners, and NGOs
For the purposes of carrying out the President's Executive Order on Reevaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid, I am approving an additional waiver of the pause under the Executive Order on Reevaluating and Realigning United States Foreign Aid and my subsequent direction of January 24, 2025, for life-saving humanitarlan assistance during the period of the review.
Implementers of existing life-saving humanitarian assistance programs should continue or resume work if they have stopped, subject to the following directions. This resumption is temporary in nature, and except by separate waiver or as required to carry out this waiver, no new contracts shall be entered into. I
1.
(a) For purposes of this waiver, life-saving humanitarian assistance applies to core life-saving medicine, medical services, food, shelter, and subsistence assistance, as well as supplies and reasonable administrative costs as necessary to deliver such assistance (b) This waiver does not apply to activities that involve abortions, family planning conferences, administrative costs other than those covered by 1(a) above, gender or DEl ideology programs, transgender surgeries, or other non-life saving assistance, (c) Migration and Refugee Assistance (MRA) may only be used to support activities under section 1a) and for repatriation of third country nationals to their country of origin or safe-third-country. Additional waivers or exceptions for humanitarian assistance not covered by this waiver may be sought through the Director of Foreign Assistance at the Department of State. Key achievements in HIV care

🌍 Since its founding, the CDCI has provided care to over 12,000 people living with HIV across Kilombero, Ulanga, and Malinyi districts. Their One Stop Clinic offers holistic care to pregnant women with HIV and their children, combining services for HIV, tuberculosis, and more.

As NCDs rise in rural areas, CDCI is expanding its focus to address these new challenges. 💪

I am increasingly interested in the idea that out of the nearly 3500 known mosquito species, the 2-4 that transmit human diseases, can and should be completely wiped out. Species sanitation if you like. I see this as a reasonable goal of serious medical entomologists, and one that would bring tremendous public health value. Top on this list in my opinion should be: Aedes aegypti, Anopheles funestus and Anopheles gambiae. I doubt anyone would disagree...
