🏃♀️❤️ Can lifelong endurance exercise be associated with cardiovascular abnormalities?
A new joint consensus statement from the European Association of Preventive Cardiology (ESC) and the American College of Cardiology (ACC) provides practical guidance for the management of *Masters Athletes* (≥35 years) with abnormal cardiovascular findings.
🔑 Key messages:
✅ Exercise remains one of the most powerful tools for reducing cardiovascular risk and improving longevity.
⚠️ However, long-term high-volume exercise may be associated with a higher prevalence of:
• Atrial fibrillation
• Bradyarrhythmias
• Ventricular arrhythmias
• Coronary artery calcification and atherosclerosis
• Aortic dilatation
• Myocardial fibrosis
• Exercise-induced arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy
💡 Importantly, these findings should not automatically lead to exercise restriction.
The document emphasizes:
🔹 Careful risk stratification
🔹 Athlete-specific clinical assessment
🔹 Integration of wearable device data
🔹 Shared decision-making
🔹 Management of traditional cardiovascular risk factors according to standard guidelines
🏅 For Masters athletes, clinical decisions should balance cardiovascular safety with the substantial health and performance benefits of lifelong exercise.
📌 One of the most important take-home messages:
*"High fitness levels reduce cardiovascular risk, but they do not eliminate the impact of cardiovascular disease when present."*
This consensus statement fills an important gap in sports cardiology, where much of our current evidence is derived from sedentary populations and may not be directly applicable to highly trained athletes.
