Two students from Tamil Nadu’s tribal communities have cleared he CLAT exam and secured admission to premier law institutions in the country.
S Ranjith (19), who studied at the Eklavya Model Residential School (EMRS) in Kumizhi in Chengalpattu district, is said to be the first student from the Irular tribal community to clear the CLAT examination. The son of daily wage labourers, Ranjith secured an ST AIR of 1,425 and gained admission to the BA LLB (Hons) course at the TN National Law University under the 7.5% reservation quota. “He is the first in our family to study. When they told me he is perhaps the first person in our community to achieve this, there could not have been a happier moment in my life. I believe that when he becomes a lawyer, he will work to uplift our community,” said his mother, Jaya S.
K Sathya, a student from the govt tribal residential school in Innadu in Kallakurichi district, secured admission to the BA LLB (Hons) at NLU (Sonipat) in Haryana during the fifth round of counselling. The 19-year-old secured an All-India ST rank of 2,355 and a PWD rank of 359. Sathya, who is specially abled, comes from a family of daily wage labourers. Her parents currently work in Mysuru. “We are extremely happy, but she is a little reluctant about going all the way to Haryana. It would have been ideal if she had secured a seat in Tamil Nadu itself,” said her brother Tamil Selvan. Sathya is also anxious about adapting to a new environment. “I don’t even know proper English. How will I manage Hindi?” she asked. Headmaster N Saravanan said Sathya had always been a bright student. “Initially, she was hesitant about preparing for CLAT, but we encouraged her because we knew she had the potential to succeed,” he said. TNNLU in Trichy has only seat reserved for ST and for the past four years we have had govt school students fill up the seat, official said.
State tribal welfare department said the department also paid counselling fees after the results and would continue to support the students after admission. “We adopted a multi-pronged approach. Students were given end-to-end support, including mock tests, special coaching sessions and counselling. Teachers escorted students to examination centres because their parents were working in other states. We understand they may face challenges such as cultural shock and language barriers. So, we will handhold them for at least six months to a year. The department will also take care of their full educational expenses until they complete their courses,”a senior state department official said.
State director of tribal welfare Annadurai said, “The entire credit goes to the teachers who motivated and guided the students throughout the process. At present, 151 students across the country are pursuing various higher education courses with support from the tribal welfare department,” he told TOI.
