@caroartc "Evaluating immigration policy thus requires modeling labor-market and fiscal channels jointly: either channel alone gives an incomplete picture of who gains and why."

New working paper!
What happened when Colombia gave nearly two million Venezuelan migrants full access to health care? Mortality fell among Colombians, who were already insured.
Abstract: Does extending full health coverage to an excluded group induce health externalities for the population already insured? In 2022 Colombia expanded health services from emergency only to full access to approximately two million Venezuelan migrants. Comparing municipalities more and less exposed to program take-up before and after its onset, we find that the program reduced mortality rates for Colombians, saving one Colombian life for each 300 migrants covered. The effects are explained by a more efficient use of the health services by beneficiaries and regular and timely payments for the newly insured patients. The Colombian deaths saved are those that timely health treatment prevents. The net fiscal cost of the program is USD 93,000 per Colombian life saved, well below the value of a statistical life.

It's worth noticing how responsibly @YanagizawaD is exploring the space of AI-generated research.
Everything is labeled as AI, and he is not spamming these papers into journals.
This is how we should explore AI-driven paper writing: with full disclosure.
@GmorganJr Because it's more likely for a man to be raped in his lifetime than it is for him to be victim of a false rape accusation, buddy. Happy to answer more of your questions.
I'm excited to welcome Abhijit Banerjee, Bernardo Silveira and Esther Duflo as our new colleagues @econ_uzh!

Different rules of the game would have radically changed history.
Our counterfactual simulations show that without colonial transfers, Europe would have been a debtor — and South Asia or Latin America could have become global creditors.

At least one position to be filled now and another later this year.
Focus is on projects in AI and applied econ.
Previous predocs have enrolled at top-ranked PhD programs in US and Europe.
This effort was only possible because these journals require data and code repositories. This allowed us to compare data across papers and identify undisclosed connections between 15 studies (e.g., overlapping samples, overlapping interventions, reused treatment assignment).
Join my outstanding research team in Zurich as a #predoc research associate in summer/fall 2025! We conduct empirical analyses of labor markets, globalization, technology and politics. More info and link to application: 🔗https://t.co/LEl9WDxIcH
