If apps like Coinbase can do complex consumer financials at scale then I'm sure smart engineers with government support can write a new Social Security stack.

I think you are over-aggrandizing the complexity of what is surely to be an archaic, bloated, slow, and barely put together system that only works with a staff of 20k people.

Almost every government software project is a complete disaster. In my state, we paid Oracle $180 billion for an Obamacare website that never worked. All the money gone and not a single person lost their job over it.

So yeah, if we can bring some Silicon Valley ingenuity into government we should go all-in.

I think you are missing the point. There are things that happen in an office that don’t happen when working remote. Connections, energy, live discussions. Not saying it needs to be everyday in the office, but there is a lot of value being in an office with your team. Energy is something that can be felt human to human, doesn’t translate electronically. This is coming from someone that runs a company that is 100% remote, so it is more unbiased than usual.
