Pandji Pragiwaksono is the biggest comedian from Indonesia. But for him to perform in his home country, he must have his material approved by the government.
โIโm required to send a transcript of my jokes to the police,โ he tells Variety. Only after the cops sign off on his punchlines will they provide a permit for the event.
After one special where he targeted Indonesiaโs two largest Muslim organizations for accepting state mining concessions (therefore tying themselves to the Indonesian government), six people filed police reports accusing Pragiwaksono of blasphemy.
He was interrogated on four occasions, for six hours each. Pragiwaksono believes the campaign against him is politically motivated and that the vice president is behind it.
โA week after the special was released, over 1,000 Muslim people poured into the streets protesting my jokes, saying that it was blasphemy and it was condescending Islam,โ Pragiwaksono says. โIt caught me by surprise because I have no intentions of condescending Islam. This is Mohammad Fawaz al-Wahidi.
He was part of the Egyptian Relief Committee in Gaza, helping provide food and shelter to displaced Palestinians. More recently, he helped organise World Cup screenings, giving families in Gaza rare moments of joy amid unimaginable hardship.
Just one hour before Egypt's World Cup match against Argentina, Mohammad was killed when occupation forces targeted the car he was travelling in. Two other Palestinians were also killed in the attack.
The day before, Egypt's national team coach, Hossam Hassan, used the world's biggest football stage to make a heartfelt plea:
"We are sending a message to the whole world: Please, let the Palestinian people live. Please, let them live."
