James Murray was appointed SoS for Health 14th May, he met consultant reps 0 times. Including during our ballot. Yvette Cooper was appointed 20th July, nothing yet despite us having a mandate for industrial action. Hopefully SoS mandatory training is complete & we can meet now

9/10 members of public felt consultants should be paid competitively vs other countries like Ireland to retain them. Starting salary is heading towards double UK and top pay point is roughly £100k more, reached after 4 years vs 14 and for 37 hours vs 40.

It's fair comment from Mr Streeting that people are waiting a long time for appointments and tests, often in pain. The reason you wait so long to see a specialist is chronic underinvestment in training capacity and consultants, and not anything to do with RD industrial action.

I’ve seen someone else on here suggest that the retired doctor who wrote this was a “junior” doctor in 1974 when he was “happy with £7,500”

Just so we’re all clear on the maths:

£7,500 in 1974 in today’s money is:

🔹 £114,756 by RPI inflation.
🔸 £72,046 by CPI inflation.

I think that if you’re going to write a piece in the Times urging the government to use and boost more AI, the fact that you are paid by a major AI company should be in the first sentence, or at least first paragraph.
I also think that the best scenario for AI is that it destroys millions of jobs with the prosperity, dignity and community that goes with them.
The worst scenario is the destruction of the human race - a fear openly expressed by an increasing number of senior and experienced AI engineers who are leaving the industry.
And somewhere in between a myriad of horrors such as yet more screen learning and screen addiction for our children.
But I do see that it will make rich men even richer. And that’s the most important thing of course.
