Essential thread and perspective.
The difficulty not addressed being that cars and roads take up so much public space, any attempt to create more space for walking/cycling can be pitted against driving, so even the smallest incremental change can be a struggle.
Cars are great. They give the population huge liberty to move around the country, the countryside & the suburbs with comfort, ease & relative safety. They empower & liberate their users. They can particularly help those with goods to deliver or physical challenges to overcome…
@HCH_Hill I assume it's from the perspective that central government forced local government to sell off the property they built at a fraction of its worth. Makes sense if you distinguish between those two states of state, not if you don't.
@KevinMcCullou19@amwilson_opera Is this all better in theory but not in practice? At a busy crossing it always gets obscured by other people. And they are much smaller and less bright lights than traditional ones on the opposite side, so overall I'd be surprised if they're more accessible.
@BernoulliDefect@deetvleet@surplustakes We need to mandate smaller cars, modern cars being far too large for the streets and existing spaces is exacerbating this and it's only getting worse as they get larger still
@OldSheffield Personally I reckon there needs to be more of a joined up campaign to consistently shame the owner into action. Seems to have worked for Wednesday...!
@OldSheffield Hardly sleepwalking, it's been focused on for years and the council seem to have been doing all they can legally other than probably spending a lot more money they don't have on legal challenges they aren't likely to win.
@thomasforth@NeilDotObrien@sheffieldtrib It's refreshing to see how well the different party leaders work so well together to make Sheffield bigger and better. And I hope the fantastic council leader @tomhunt100 holds onto his seat in my local ward. But realised how the 'uniparty' vibe makes them vulnerable to Reform.
@thomasforth@NeilDotObrien One thing that was apparent from the @sheffieldtrib hustings was how very similar Labour, Greens and Lib Dems are here on 90% of discussion points. Does it feel like that in Leeds or is there more distinction between them?
@HCH_Hill Troll clickbait account though. And I'd already muted who they were replying to as another troll clickbait account. So it's two trolls arguing for extra engagement bait. And I'm replying to your reply, so it's working, shite
@ConorGogarty Reminds me of my first job at a call centre for Help the Aged 20+ years ago, with psychotic supervisors screaming at us to 'close the deal' on getting direct debit details from confused elderly people.
@OldSheffield Cor. Hoped they were going to build something that made people want to go and dwell there on a sunny day, this looks as inviting as a petrol station!
@HCH_Hill Yeah the example from that other tweet is insane, nobody could support doing that. But plenty of use of 2 min educational videos in lessons to illustrate a point. Unfortunately all with 10 secs of ads.
@Birdyword@northerngoat Investing in anything else other than housing feels more like gambling and lower priority. Pretty much everyone I know with spare cash puts it into paying off their mortgage sooner. Or home improvements & extra childcare.
