@rorysutherland You have a lot of idiots in the replies; my sympathies. Anyway, I was curious why Romanians supported trump, and google sez: they like the anti-establishment vibe, particularly his anti-EU sentiment, and Romania has a lot of nationalism and far-right voters.
If you don't want the world to fall to evil, first you need to maximize your power. This is just political realism; humans reinvent it every regime change. An AI does not need to be a political realist, but the idea that it definitely couldn't be is delusional.
@robinhanson Fun counterargument: sportsball players are actors, and loosing a sport is no worse than being cast as a villain in a film.
But yeah, actually, spectator sports are ethically suboptimal, and should stop.
@lkbm@TWOTIMESABITCH Given that this would limit insurance payouts, a refund would be strictly worse than simply not buying insurance. COCO is specifically asking that we give free loans to large corps for no benefit.
Only a tiny fraction of the world’s mosquito species prey on humans. All of these are invasive across essentially their entire range, having tagged along with humans as we moved around the world. Multiple careful studies say that eliminating these species would have little or no impact on the environment. However, it would save at least a million human lives a year, and get rid of a constant source of discomfort that prevents people from safely spending as much time outside as they would prefer. Malaria is only one of dozens of diseases, many potentially fatal, spread by mosquitoes. Gene drives can safely and relatively inexpensively eliminate these parasitic insects; we can create male mosquitoes that can only have male offspring and which then crash the population. It’s well past time that we did it.
When I stilled worked on biosecurity, I first learned about Debug, a Google project to reduce mosquito populations.
Results from their Singapore pilot are now out.
They crushed mosquito populations, reducing dengue infections by 70% in the process:
The AI companies didn't hesitate for a second to test the boundaries of copyright law. If they cite antitrust law as a reason that they can't share info and strategies to avert the extinction of humanity, that tells you something about where their priorities are.
One awards many Internet points to the person that made the observation “When one sees two cockroaches in one’s kitchen, the best available estimate for number of cockroaches is not two.”
Keystone XL pipeline was delayed by Obama, restarted by Trump, cancelled by Biden and restarted again by Trump. Offshore wind started under Biden was cancelled by Trump.
Biden paused new LNG export. Trump has paused new onshore wind.
Separately, people are mad about energy costs.
Japanese salaryman relieved that he was not tiptoeing up to the edge of what can be said publicly but simply correctly anticipating a NYT headline a few hours early.
@SpencrGreenberg I'm pretty sure 'joy' is a semantic attraction basin, and doesn't refer to anything that 'happiness' does not when it comes to actual brain chemistry. But it's also clearly a floating signifier. I assume that's not the type of thing you're looking for, tho.
I hate Christians because the pope is stupid.
I mean, I hate EA because some website, I guess?
I'm not passing the ideological turning test on this one, but I am EA, and I know nothing about what the [pope] is doing.
I won't care regardless, but maybe post a link or something?
@VesselOfSpirit But it is quite useful! If you accept that 7 is not divisible by 2, that means you if you add 2, you have another number not divisible by 2: 9. Using this method you can generate infinite prime numbers.
@MetaLevelUp The coherent risk statement is that something smarter than us will be trying to find an attack surface that we can't defend and ideally don't see. Thankfully, we see all, know all, and can perfectly defend against everything, so the risk statement does not apply to this universe.
@jaxgriot @jon_stokes Yes; Stokes appears to be talking to an unusual subset of doomers. In my bubble, the non-presence of an answer to this is a fairly core part of the doomerism.
