Proud Boys showed up in Silver Spring and got violent today, trying to scare away families and children attending Drag Story Hour at Loyalty Books.
But the community held a wall of 🌈 safety and support. The kids had a great time and were none the wiser. We will never back down.
This is what bike community looks like!
So very grateful that we have each other to remind ourselves of the many joys of biking
Thank you Roll Out Crew, TraffikBoyz, and East Bay Bike Party for bringing us all out today in solidarity and unity
@NeedhiBhalla @Schimelman A couple of my friends in non-science jobs have had their masters/EdD degrees paid for by their jobs while working! I'm not saying it's 1:1 comparison, but I do believe the positive aspects of mentorship and training in PhD programs can be maintained while reducing exploitation.
@Schimelman @NeedhiBhalla I really appreciated this convo and I think it's worth mentioning that "real jobs" often have a lot of training and professional development associated with them as well. The POV of a grad student is just to be paid a living wage for the labor we're undoubtedly providing.
This week, BSU is launching our citywide campaign to fight the Evolv Contract & get students talking about community-driven school safety. We will be passing out hundreds of these sheets across a dozen schools w/ resources for contacting the School Board. ✊
This is a scandal that should boil our blood across the ideological spectrum: “Low-income wage earners who earn under $25,000 annually and claim the Earned Income Tax Credit were five and half times more likely to be audited than other taxpayers.”
Karon Blake, 13, was shot & killed by a NE man who tells police he saw him breaking into cars early Sat.
Tonight Karon’s school shared photos of him, describing him as a quiet & inquisitive 6th grader who loved football & fashion. Police have not yet id’d or charged shooter. 1/2

Guns are now the No. 1 killer of children in the U.S., surpassing car crashes. Gun death rates for children have been rising for years, and in 2020 guns became the leading cause of death for those ages 1 to 18. https://t.co/qrco9L6vQv
Like brussel sprouts? Many of us do, but I bet many aren't aware of how hard they are to harvest. Thanks Cruz for sharing this video showing us the process you & your coworkers went through last Oct as you bent up & down, chopping through the tough prickily stem #WeFeedYou
BREAKING: 48K University of Calfornia TAs, postdocs & other student workers just walked off the job.
It's the largest strike in the US since 2019.
Many UC workers earn < $24k/yr. A PhD student I spoke to said they donate blood plasma to make ends meet.

I used to say "senseless" and "he got killed for no reason" all of the time, mostly because that's what I grew up hearing. But violence is contagious, and so is our messaging around it. The violence and the messaging matter because they have consequences for how we behave
