In solidarity with MIT Class President Megha Vemuri, who and her family have been unjustly banned from her own graduation.
This isn’t an exception. It’s becoming the norm. Silencing student voices has become routine, not just in the US but across India and the world.
From JNU and DU in Delhi to TISS in Mumbai and IISER in Pune, students have been suspended, arrested, and vilified for speaking up — about fee hikes, discrimination, or the right to protest.
You don’t have to agree with every student slogan. But if you believe in democracy, you must defend the right to dissent. Because universities aren’t just places to earn degrees. They’re spaces to question, imagine, and push back.
Let’s remember: a country that fears its students isn’t building a strong future. It’s burying it.
Delighted to close the year with the publication of my book "Lessons in State Capacity from Delhi's Schools". This book is an effort to bring the voices of the frontline state - block officers, teachers, health workers - into the debate on state capacity in India (1/10) 🧵
Happy to share my brief interview with CLPN. My book is structured in five chapters, each focusing on the interactions between poor, marginalised caste communities, missionary and government educators in colonial south India. It is available here : https://t.co/2q0407QVfx

Leadership is not always a distant treasure to be sought. Its also not always found in "bigger spaces". Sometimes, it can be found much closer than we imagine and in "small and steady spaces" 💪 #LeadforLearning
Earlier, we asked our followers to nominate an education leader who impacted their journeys.
Now it’s YOUR turn! Tag your leader, share their story, and ask them to nominate their leader. Let’s celebrate those who #LeadForLearning!

My article in @IndianExpress today on a new wave of children’s books in India.
“The last three decades have seen a sudden expansion in the sheer volume of children’s books, also reflected in an expansion in the number of publishers, authors, illustrators, etc. The readers have expanded too, as there is a class now that can afford to go beyond textbooks. There is also a wider range of genres including graphic novels and age group-specific books, including young-adult literature. And there is a discernible improvement in the quality of design, translation and production. At the same time, the two editors conclude that “given India’s large, diverse and multilingual character, both the production and consumption of children’s books are mere drops in terms of actual needs”.

Happy International Women in Mathematics Day!
Maryam Mirzakhani won the Fields Medal in 2014 for her important contributions to geometry and dynamical systems. May 12 was Mirzakhani’s birthday, and now it is a day to celebrate all women in the mathematical sciences.
