@polysophical Based on the testimony he gave in court, his likely response to this thread would have been: "If I was in the mood for death threats you wouldn't have been alive to $&>/post. I only offer death promises."
The strangest thing about all this discourse is that I’m realizing a lot of Christians seem to think we hate or have an unfavorable opinion of them, but that just isn’t true.
In fact, we don’t view any religion negatively, even though we are the most negatively viewed religion.
@Portland_Sucks_@FiredUpCoug I will answer all of these if there's any good reason to do so.
Will you meet with the missionaries if I provide answers, or is this simply a facile attempt at ad nauseum?
Pay no heed to the obnoxious minority of Christians currently stirring up contention.
Many of them are not especially interested in following Christ.
They are interested in getting you to follow THEM.
Because they benefit financially when you join THEIR flock.
@AnneOfTheBooks Anyone who really knows many members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints will know that none will be reconsidering.
The conversation today was mostly trinitarians with a medium understanding of doctrine arguing with people who know both traditions well.
The claim points to the 11 signed testimonies printed in every Book of Mormon (3 Witnesses who saw the plates + angel; 8 who handled and examined them). None publicly recanted.
For the Resurrection, 1 Corinthians 15 (written ~20-25 years later) names appearances to Peter, the Twelve, 500+ at once (most still alive then), James, the apostles, and Paul. The four Gospels add independent accounts of the empty tomb and appearances. These are early, multiple sources—not a stack of matching signed affidavits like the plates.
It's a narrow apples-to-oranges comparison often used in apologetics. The resurrection evidence rests on broader early attestation, transformed lives, and rapid spread despite persecution.
The thing about the LDS Church is:
If you go to Church you will learn it is true
But...if you read the scriptures you will also learn it is true
But...if you study our history honestly you will also learn it is true
But...if you pray about it you will also learn it is true
@realDrTT@BlackBlessedLDS Mosiah is the eighth book in the BoM and has some of my favorite chapters (King Banjamin's discourse).
I hope you benefit from reading the Book of Mormon.
@realDrTT@GreysonBarrios This is not an unreasonable criticism, and you'll find sympathetic members.
We want the most reliable, original, and best translation of the Bible.
The KJV is still most commonly used by fat, but we've seen more use of other translations and books with time.
I read the Intro to the Book of Mormon. Here's my reflections:
Right off the bat, there's a lot of things that I don't understand about LDS and Mormonism — and reading the intro certainly has illustrated that for me.
The testimony of the 11 witnesses is interesting. I am not sure what to make of it yet. It seems a bit overkill. Like, there's sincere doubt that this text will be taken seriously.
At the end of the Testimony of the Three Witnesses sounds very familiar:
"And the honor be to the Father, and to the Son,
and to the Holy Ghost, which is one God. Amen."
Ultimately, one thing that really stood out to me was this:
"We invite all men everywhere to read the Book of Mormon, to ponder in their hearts the message it contains, and then to ask God, the Eternal Father, in the name of Christ if the book is true."
This put me at ease, as it is an invitation to review and question it. I'm going to continue reading at some point tomorrow afternoon.
Thanks to those of you who listened in and especially those of you who are members of the LDS faith.
I am sure I'll have lots of questions.
This-- from the mainline PC (USA) is a reminder that once you leave a Biblical understanding of sexuality, there's no limit to the depravity you'll sanction.
@MattisRedacted@ministrymotherh Our Catholic and aorthodox brothers learn in their religion to develop faith in Christ's atonement.
Regardless of the moniker on the building, that effort and faith cannot be a wasted effort.
@AdAltum@extradeadjcb You've just our interpretation dead wrong. The doctrine of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is that Christ had an entirely divine nature living in an entirely mortal body.
Christ was the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob born to save all men.
@86rothbard@CatholicInUtah And true.
Many Jews rejected Christ when He brought a restoration of priesthood authority and a new covenant to replace an old, lesser law.
If the Church of Jesis Christ of Latter-day Saints is true, then the spirit will testify of it. I know it does.
There are a lot of people who expend their energy in trying to tear down other people’s faith. I don’t care what people have to say about what we believe. We should be the best examples of followers of Christ that we can be.
