In short, getting digital transformations right for human (and planetary) health has only partly to do with technology itself. It is first and foremost a question of equity, democracy, inclusion, and human rights, with governance implications at multiple scales. 8/
Finally, governments must invest in the pillars of digitally-enabled health systems, while also ensuring that digital health solutions are tailored to local contexts and needs. Digital public goods can be a key component of digital health strategies in many countries. 7/
3rd, we urge a new approach to health and health-related data, rooted in the concept of data solidarity. In practice, we need independent data institutions in every country, to protect privacy while ensuring that data is easily used and shared when needed for the public good. 6/
2nd, it is vital to build public trust in the digital (health) ecosystem. This means ensuring public participation 'by default' in the design and governance of digital health tools, for example through open data and bottom-up accountability mechanisms. 5/
What does this mean, in practice? We propose four main action areas. 1st, governments must close all digital, health and education divides by 2030, as a necessary baseline for sustainable health futures. 4/
We argue that policy-makers should consider digital technologies as increasingly important determinants of health, both in their own right and as accelerators other social, commercial, and environmental determinants. 3/
In the report, we explore the multi-faceted interactions of digital technologies and human health and well-being. How can we ensure healthy futures in an age of rapid digital transformations, which affect all areas of life? 2/
