On April 16, 2007, about a year after he moved to #NYC to start his career as an engineering professor at NYU #Tandon, @NYU_CUSP Director @PorfiriMaurizio received the news that there had been a mass shooting at his alma mater, @virginia_tech #engineering science & mechanics building.

32 people were killed in that attack, one of the worst mass-shooting events in #Americanhistory. Several of the victims were colleagues and classmates of Porfiri’s, and he continually wondered if there was a way to apply his #engineering skills to prevent a similar tragedy. Thirteen years later, Porfiri became the first researcher to receive a $2 million federal grant from the @NSF earmarked specifically for #gunrelatedresearch to study #massshootings. Already, his team’s research has helped uncover surprising motivations behind #gunpurchases & mass shootings, revealed patterns in #statetostategunownership & led to new models for predicting gun homicides.
