@emilychappell I’d recommend heading straight to the hills! Reporting live from them right now. A nice 8 mile stretch north-south, easy to navigate with some lovely views 🙃
A 13-year study of a dozen cities found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all users of the road. As for painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. And for sharrows, it’s safer to NOT have them. Via @StreetsblogUSA https://t.co/vTLLMF7m0e
0.5% of Dutch cyclists don helmets. Yet theirs are among the safest streets on earth. Why?
They realize it’s more effective to slow cars, build protected infrastructure, and create a culture of everyday cycling. Not force the most vulnerable to armour up. https://t.co/S8s6tOBgL0
We did it #footwayparking banned in Scotland. Thanks to all supporters and partner organisations for support over a 10 year period 🎉🥂😁💚 1/2 https://t.co/a3njWs122Q
Lots of talk today at the #healthystreets2019 summit about the cycling paradise of Utrecht, one of the cities I explored on my #pedalforcleanair tour. If you want to experience a truly liveable and lovable city, that prioritises people over cars, visit Utrecht. #cities4people
@Dijkschaap Hi Dolly. I’m at an interesting workshop - research shows that roundabouts, when designed correctly like the one in my video, is one of the safest ways to design an intersection. Still interested to hear where your claim comes from.
I’m back to cycling in the UK again after an inspiring trip through Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Germany and the Netherlands. Never have I felt more determined to push for safer, more people-friendly streets like these #citiesforpeople#healthystreets#cleanupourair
Four years ago Waltham Forest had zero bike hangers, and now they have 380 and plans for plenty more. Reclaiming space from roads and making #activetravel more accessible. #leadingtheway#comeonlondon
The fab @leecraigie_ kick starting Glasgow’s #heathystreets summit. Great to hear about Lee’s new(ish) role as Action Nation Commissioner. Scotland chose well 👌
@johanromin From what I’ve seen, it’s the lack of cycle-friendly infrastructure that can lead to fast/aggressive riding. It can feel like I’m preparing for battlefield when I cycle across London. Yet with separate bike lanes with traffic lights allowing a seamless flow, why rush!?
@Dijkschaap I find this hard to believe. Surely infrastructure that works to reduce motor traffic/increase cycling not only makes it safer for people on bikes, but also leads to less air and noise pollution. I'd be very interested to read the research that backs up your claim. Please share.
@EnviroPR@BYCS_org@GreenCapital18 A visit for next time. I could have spent another 2 months just in the Netherlands alone. So much to see and do, yet a good reason to return again soon.
Yay, I made it! The last stop on my #pedalforcleanair Norway-London cycle tour 🙌. Great to meet the @BYCS_org team and learn more about their global #bicyclemayor programme. 54 mayors in cities around the world and counting. London next!?
👏 Congratulations @e_hookham!
🚲 Emma #cycled all the way from Norway down to the Netherlands to finish her adventure here in Amsterdam!
Emma went on this trip to investigate ways other European cities are #tackling air pollution: to share best practices back home in the UK!
