Diseases that predominantly affect women (e.g. #Migraine, #Anxiety, #Endometriosis) receive *less* research funding than male-dominant diseases. Women's health concerns are underfunded & understudied compared to their disease burden. #CanadianPain23

A new paper from @e_lizlyons & @laurina_zhang in @SMJ_Jour finds that publicly available salary information prompts organizations to reduce the gender pay gap. @e_lizlyons of @GPS_UCSD will discuss findings on tomorrow's @KPBS Midday Edition. https://t.co/BILkxhIxrk

How does mandated salary transparency at Canadian universities impact the gender pay gap? What could it mean for other industries and countries? GPS prof. @e_lizlyons and her coauthor @laurina_zhang are shedding some light on those questions in @SMJ_Jour.

@laurina_zhang and I are happy to announce that we have a new paper out at @SMJ_Jour on mandated salary transparency and the gender pay gap in the context of Canadian universities
Our findings imply salary transparency can drive improvements in gender equality when a legal requirement is accompanied by a substantive reduction in monitoring cost due to organization-wide responses in anticipation of reputational costs.
We don’t find evidence consistent with the positive effect of salary transparency on gender pay being driven by changes in either faculty composition or increases in successful female bargaining.
I, personally, have immeasurably benefitted from time, support, and mentorship from @PaulFNiehaus so can directly endorse the chance to learn from him as an absolutely invaluable opportunity for anyone looking to use research to make progress on society's most important problems.
It's time for economists to grow up and deal with the cultural problem that allows sexual harassment, sexism, and racism to persist in our field.
I had some things to say in the article, so if you've read it you know what I think. But let's go through it.
