For 20 years, Founders Fund has actively avoided media profiles. I finally convinced (some of) the team to provide a level of access we’ve never given a journalist. @mariogabriele spent over a year researching FF, and the result is the closest approximation to the truth to date.
Today, the first part of his series:
I spent 18 months researching @foundersfund.
"No Rivals" is the result.
A 35,000-word series, released over the next four weeks.
It’s a product of extensive research, interviews with more than a dozen key figures, and a detailed analysis of previously undisclosed returns.
in 2013, america closed its last uranium enrichment plant, and lost the capacity to produce its own nuclear fuel. today, general matter signed a lease with the DOE to enrich in paducah, kentucky, bringing the very site we closed back to life.
There is no venture capital firm like Founders Fund, and there is no writer who tells venture capital firms' stories like Mario Gabriele.
In their respective crafts, both have No Rivals.
That is the title of Mario's epic four-part series on Peter Thiel and Founders Fund, and the topic of our conversation on Hyperlegible.
Sometimes, someone writes something so good that it fills me with a healthy, respectful, chapeau-inducing jealousy. Rene Girard would probably have something to say about that. No Rivals is one of those pieces.
On this week's Hyperlegible, we talked about how he got such in-depth access, how he wrangled everything he learned into the beautifully coherent story he told, and of course, we talked all about how Founders Fund has built one of the best, and certainly the most unique, venture capital firm in the world.
And we end the conversation, as he ended the series, by discussing whether and how Founders Fund will be able to stay original and dominant when everyone is trying to copy them.
@LukeThompson360@mariogabriele Honestly, it took me more than a decade on the job to convince this group to engage with press in a substantive way -- they don't enjoy it and they don't need to do it. They finally agreed to give me a shot because Mario's work and pitch were so compelling.

Our work isn't finished. Next year, five supervisor seats are up for election, and we're aiming to win them all. We'll also have critical charter reforms on the ballot. These structural changes will help San Francisco run better for decades to come.
Last election, we were outspent by opponents and narrowly lost some key races. We're not letting that happen again: our budget for next year is our largest ever to ensure decisive victories.
We need your help to win. If you’d like to donate to @GrowSF and be part of transforming our city, please DM me or email [email protected].
I spent over a year at Founders Fund searching for an American enrichment company to invest in, only to find there wasn’t one.
So we built our own. General Matter is filling the nuclear U.S. fuel gap. We are enriching uranium in America, and we will be shipping by the end of the decade.
Join us to help fuel the next era in American power.
