They say reading is on the decline, but I’m at 66.6k words this week and I’m only in 49th on the Readerboard.
All the readers are on Readwise Books. It’s delightful, my favorite app. There are a bunch of little things they do to make the reading experience better and it’ll only get better from here.
Come join and try to outread me.
@tomcritchlow@daylightco haven't held a boox so not sure relatively, but haven't had any issues holding it in bed, that's where I do most of my reading
The limits of intelligence discussion unlocked a weird idea which is something like: what if humans evolved to have the optimal level of intelligence for the universe?
Obviously, computers/AI can be faster, hold more memory and knowledge, and coordinate at greater scale, which means they'll be able to do (and are already doing) things that we can't, but maybe they don't get much better than us at figuring things out given the same data.
Deutsch calls humans universal explainers, capable, in principle, of understanding any explanation that can be understood.
Maybe beyond some level of intelligence, progress becomes increasingly constrained by access to reality, which seems right, but the weird idea is that maybe we basically have that level of intelligence.
Which maybe means AI will be more capable than us but not as incomprehensible to us as we are to ants or something.
Also makes me wonder if we could keep up given upgrades to memory/storage, etc... like a more collaborative version of the WaitButWhy Neuralink and the Brain's Magical Future argument.
Half-baked, but it's an idea I hadn't had before listening to this.
Cliff Sosin (@CliffordSosin) is one of my favorite people to call, ask some big questions, and then shut up and listen.
This conversation is a version of one of those calls.
We discuss:
- The limits of intelligence
- Owning the complements to it
- Meta, the frontier labs, and the AI build-out
- Capital markets
- Why he's comfortable with 80% of his portfolio in Carvana.
