1/7🧵 I'm excited to share my paper titled "Anxiety and Depression: A Top-Down, Bottom-Up Model of Circuit Function" which I coauthored with @matildee_rose , @RayLMir and @kaymtye published in @NYASciences awarded by @BlavatnikAwards (graphical abstract below)...
Thrilled to finally share my PhD work, out today as a preprint! 🎉
Q: How do the brain’s dopamine and serotonin systems work together to drive learning? 🧠
Short answer, 🧵 below
Long answer:

1/3 New serotonin (5-HT) GRAB sensors! We developed largely-improved green and all-new red genetically encoded fluorescent 5-HT sensors for dual-color imaging in vivo. Using these new 5-HT sensors, we are able to simultaneously monitor 5-HT and other neurochemicals.
Several amazing papers recently on dopamine’s role in food and drug motivation. Yet most focus on striatal DA. Not us! We probed dorsal BNST dopamine’s role in sign and goal tracking using GRABDA during Pavlovian approach, RPE, satiety etc. Check it out!

I remember sitting at the nurse’s station in January of 2018, writing a note. One of the nurses asked me a personal question and I told her, “You know, I think I finally realized that my life was just meant to be hard.”
She laughed and said, “Come on, you’re a doc. You probably-

the most powerful climate report of the decade was published on monday, after 195 governments fought over the words in its summary for policymakers, and the only media allowed in the room just published its account of who lobbied for what 1/
Another fantastic collab with @Datta_Lab! We rebuilt MoSeq from the ground up to work on keypoints instead of depth video. Work led by “dual threat” comp/sys neuro postdoc @caleb_weinreb.
Let me further highlight a few of the technical innovations… 1/3
As most of us know, Krishna Shenoy passed away earlier this year. @aaronbatista , @chethan , and I wrote an obituary for Krishna, which just came out:

Say hello to PhaSER: an open-source tool that you (yes, you!) can use to perform real-time phase-estimation and phase-specific manipulations. Here we show that PhaSER can directly manipulate the phase-locking of SOM+ interneurons in awake, behaving mice!
