My oilfield career started in the post office parking lot by the Midland Airport and I get sentimental every time I drive by it.

My dad's friend told me to meet him there on his way to his shop.

Told me about this new drilling company in town, he got me an interview the next week.

I interviewed in the morning—they called me that night and told me to get some boots and gloves, they just ran off a hand and I was starting night tour.

I was so scared and nervous when I pulled up to the rig that I could have puked.

I confronted every feeling of anxiety and doubt that I had with the desire to make something of myself.

What I lacked in experience and knowledge, I would make up with effort and outwork every motherfucker on that rig.

I still can't wrap my head around how instrumental the events in those short seven days were for shaping the rest of my life.

And what I would tell every young kid today mimics what I did:

Focus on the one variable the you can control, 'effort.'

Work your ass off 100 hours a week learning as many skills and meeting as many people that you can across different disciplines.

Increase your surface area of knowledge, skills, disciplines, and people. You will find the opportunities at these intersections.
