The cold has definitely arrived and thoughts are on the cost of energy. We’ve taken a look at last month’s Autumn statement, which (finally) brought HMT to support a new package of policies on energy efficiency and energy demand.
How does it stack up?

@James_BG Thanks for the analysis. We saw this in the last financial crisis, where climate change was kicked into the long grass. We don’t have time to do that again. We must act now & prioritise the transition to Net Zero.
@heatpolicyrich Whilst the government buys votes by helping tenants to buy social housing, surely they should be using those funds to fund improved insulation and build more energy efficient social housing🤔
This is a simple but effective way to collectively lower electricity emissions and even utilise excess renewable energy.
It'd be great if this was expanded to timing the charging of laptops that are nearly always plugged in.
In the 3rd yr undergrad course on policy making I teach at @ShefUniPolitics we discuss how the ‘rational’ model does not capture well how policy is actually made. The government’s new energy strategy will provide me with a helpful case study for years to come. A short thread. /1
There is a lot of media debate this weekend about the gov making wind and nuclear central to their energy security strategy. But if it doesn’t put action to cut energy waste at its heart, it will have failed. Our research shows gas demand could be cut by a quarter by 2030
Apparently one of our cabinet ministers has been in a coma for the last decade and reckons wind is "extremely expensive"
Have they checked the price of gas power recently?!?
No?
Oh ok, since you ask, gas is 5-6x more expensive than wind
@tomcallumreid @FullyChargedDan Depends on the age of the flat - EPC & usage, eg baths/showers. Some options are @SunampLtd heat batteries and electric/infrared panel heaters.
@The_PlugSeeker @DJBurges @LidlGB @Pod_Point @ShellStationsUK Many Norwegians run down to single figures %. Network reliability has to improve or charge point owners will find their networks turn into white elephants!
@Gill_Nowell The challenge is the car manufacturers. The Chinese can make lower cost, attractive EVs, but European companies like Audi and BMW are sticking to expensive fully spec’d cars so that they don’t cut off sales of their ICE models. Audi makes and A2 EV but only sells that in China!
