New government, new podcast! In @SPERIshefuni's 'Lessons in Power: what can the new Labour government learn from the last one?' @MemsAyinla and I ask ministers and advisers from the Blair-Brown era for their advice to the new team. All 9 episodes now out! https://t.co/5Ok5BHedDH
@kateferguson4 Not sure this is right. Polling in Gorton and Denton showed that Burnham would have won that by-election. Burnham is amazingly popular in Manchester. If yesterday's anti-Labour vote was really about Starmer, as it seems to be, it will help not hinder Burnham if he stands.
At COP30, a recalcitrant bloc—Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Russia, India, China and others—blocked agreement on any mention of fossil fuels or the need to shift away from them, writes @michaelujacobs.

So this COP30 thing. What’s it all about? As I am not really using X any more (for anti-Musk reasons), you’ll have to flip to Bluesky to get my take on the UN climate conferences and why they’re important. https://t.co/2lfeVQHLgJ
What a lazy, cliched analysis this is! I stopped being an adviser to Gordon Brown 15 years ago. I am a professor of political economy at the University of Sheffield who analyses policy not through the lens of Labour disagreements of 15-25 years ago but from what I see now.
"It's pretty clear that old Blair-Brownite divison is re-emerging."
Historic divides in the Labour party are coming back, says @AdamBoultonTABB, after Gordon Brown's former special adviser criticises Labour's benefits cuts.

"As we confront in the polycrisis... we need to acknowledge that it is not just a new set of economic policies which is needed, but a whole new theoretical foundation for them"

The bigger question is: who decided that the A38 was a single road from Bodmin to Mansfield? It’s obviously really a succession of many local roads. Presumably some MoT civil servant decided to give them all the same number; ditto for the A361 etc. Who? Why? When?
There are several roads which seem to be in the wrong zone - eg the A34 in Manchester, the A38 in Nottinghamshire, the A414 in Essex. But trace them back and they usually start in the ‘right’ zone: the A34 in Hampshire, the A38 in Devon; the A414 off the A41. 1/2

We urgently need to reform this short-termist fiscal framework so that our public finances can be truly sustainable.
There are lots of suggestions out there from the likes of @instituteforgov , @NIESRorg , @CETEx_LSE , @IPPR , @NEF
Hopefully govt looks seriously at these.
For those for whom 8,000 words is too many but 140 too few, may I offer the Goldilocks version of my Political Quarterly annual lecture - and journal article - on post-neoliberal economic policy. My conclusion is that… sorry I’ve run out of space. You’ll have to read it. @po_qu
