Young people actively hate AI.
My two younger daughters are 19 and 18, both at universities - one in the UK the other in Italy. Through them, I happen to know quite a few kids their age.
And ALL OF THEM seem to universally hate AI.
To them it's "something old people invented that we now have to deal with... as if climate change wasnt enough"
AI is cringe. When they introduce me to their friends, they literally say "heyya, meet my dad, he's a software engineer but nonono, NOT IN AI, dont worry, hahah".
They hate it for flooding their social feeds with slop, ruining music, taking phone scams to the next level, also destroying careers & devaluing their hobbies - why become an architect, this skill is about to become worthless? Why learn a musical instrument if session musicians are already obsolete?
The outcome is interesting, though - they're spending less and less time on public social, meeting up IRL, moving their online lives into private group chats with actual verified friends. TikTok and Reels are increasingly cringe-something for old dudes.
Which, I guess, might be a net positive after all...
$3.5T ÷ ~160M US workers ≈ $22k of AI revenue per worker, per year. Average total compensation is ~$90k, and $3.5T is ~23% of all US labor compensation. So AI has to book roughly a quarter of every worker's cost — either by making them 25% more productive, or by taking the job.
Here's the part nobody sizes: it's the same pool of dollars. If the $3.5T comes out of enterprise payroll, the buyers are the people whose wages just shrank. Labor substitution is deflationary for the demand it needs. The revenue only closes if the productivity gain expands the pie faster than AI captures it — and if the gain lands in workers' pockets, not just in capex returns.
Which leaves a practical question: which link do you stand on?
• Selling hours in work AI does adequately → you are the cost line being cut.
• Owning the scarce complements → power, grid, land, cooling, trades. Boring, hard to tokenize, and the buildout physically cannot happen without them.
• Being the operator who keeps the margin → use AI to deliver 3x output and price the outcome, not the hour.
$3.5T isn't a bubble question. It's whether AI shows up in your income statement as a cost or as leverage. Most people get the first by default; the second is a deliberate choice.
To justify today’s data center buildout, AI would need to bring in about $3.5 trillion a year by 2032, per a new Brookings paper.
That’s 8.8% of U.S. GDP, nearly as much as Americans spend on food (9.1%), and far more than on energy (5.1%).
