Mediodorsal thalamus is reciprocally connected with prefrontal cortical regions, but it also projects to striatum. We hypothesized that MD might contribute to action learning and used slice ephys, DREADDS, and photometry to examine MD input into striatum.
We'll be having our 3rd annual MINDS Symposium this August 29th, 1-5 pm Bonner Hall 2130! The CoB scholars will highlight their research, along with a keynote from Dr. Anne Beatty-Martinez from UCSD, special thanks to @IBROorg for supporting Aisha Cinar and Sasha Bikkina!
Scientists are now organizing events, called Stand Up for Science, on 7 March in Washington, D.C., and state capitals. https://t.co/fhMS1HI3YW @NewsfromScience
CFPB - closed
USAID - closed
Medicaid - under attack
NIH cancer funding - frozen
Department of Education - under attack
But do you know who just got a NEW government contract for $38,858,978 literally today?
SpaceX — owned by Elon Musk
finding this outright attack on the biomedical research enterprise in this country so deeply dark, yes as a scientist whose career depends on it but more importantly as a human & patient who has benefited from NIH-funded research in extremely real ways, as most of us have.
Children's Wisconsin is starting to deny care to Trans kids based on the President's illegal and discriminatory executive order.
Doctors - not politicians should decide what type of care is appropriate for their patients. @childrenswi should reverse course.
This is a huge deal.
“Indirect costs”, as they’re called, from NIH still pay for direct science — eg, funding science labs, lab upkeep — but also university administration. Cutting this line item by billions of dollars is going to threaten university jobs but also potentially cut into science lab funding.
There are absolutely controversies/concerns about wasteful indirect cost allocation. But it’s hard to imagine a cut this deep not affecting science labs directly.
This is just not where I’d start cutting billions. Universities (including those that don’t have $10b endowments) are gonna scream, and I’d guess we’re gonna hear about extremely worthy programs relying on labs being endangered.
that’s what happens when you push into people’s heads for five years that they don’t need to protect the most vulnerable people in our society and it’s fine if they all die and everyone goes Ok Yay!
Are you a UCSD undergraduate student interested in paid neuroscience research? Apply to the CoB-KIBM Scholars Program by March 31st! No prior research experience required!
The defining trait of the trump administration is attacking us on as many fronts as possible as quickly as possible. They’re essentially throwing cooked grenades towards all our communities simultaneously w goal to overwhelm us. The greatest defense right now is solidarity.
So it’s going to spend 3 years crippled by insecurity, messing up everything it tries, contemplate quitting as it’s friends get rich and start families, before finally pulling it all together in a manic amphetamine fueled two month stretch and making an amazing discovery nobody reads because it’s paywalled?
I gave up on trying to find a way to make my life better, right now. I stopped trying to think of a solution. Instead, I just did some things that I enjoy and didn't worry about any solutions for getting out of my current situation. I decided that I will wait until I feel relaxed and am not worried about making things better as fast as possible, because the best solutions come when we're relaxed and feeling all right & when we're focused on something different. The thinking & stress block the ability to find the best solutions. I have to do this from time to time, over and over again as I make small improvements over time. Life's a continuous adventure, mystery & bunch of experiments.
also the law in question is indefensible. It only bans treatment for transgender kids. The same treatments are available to cis kids. It's discriminatory on its face.
As the scientific literature expands at a speed that goes beyond anyone’s capacity to read and understand it all, perhaps these kinds of AI systems will become essential assistive tools.
