I think I finally understand what people mean when they say, "Run away from a one-man business." 😭
Or a business without a clear Organizational structure.

My dad spoke to someone who owns an audit firm in Ibadan, so I went there today to see if I could start working with them. He told me to be there by 12pm, and I got there on time. I then proceeded to wait for 2 hours and 30 minutes which is fine. Na me dey find work now.🥲 I would have waited for more hours if I had to.

I went in a shirt, jeans and Nike sneakers because… it’s Saturday. I genuinely didn’t think I was committing a fashion crime.

The first thing he pointed out was my hair. Apparently, if I want to work with him, I have to cut it. Not just trim it o. Proper lowcut. 😭

That one, I understand, it's like a professional ethic thing, although forcing someone to keep a particular haircut is a bit much. If the concern is corporate appearance, fine. But there are ways to communicate a dress code without making it sound like your barber is also part of the employment package.

Then came the actual terms.

They work 8am–10pm, Monday to Saturday.

According to him, Sunday isn't compulsory. But he also said people usually come on Sundays because he comes to work, and "as a father," they see him working and willingly come too.

Hmm. 😭

I can already imagine how "Sunday is not compulsory" will sound when you’re the only person who doesn’t show up.

Then he mentioned that accommodation is provided at the back of the office because they close around 10pm and he wouldn’t allow his workers to go home that late.

So basically, you work from 8am–10pm, then sleep behind the office, wake up and continue the next day.

At this point, I was already mentally calculating how many hours of my life I was about to donate. 😂

Then he dropped another one: ICAN exams.

Apparently, you can only write ICAN in November if you work there. No May diet. No flexibility.

So if I write Skills this November and pass, but want to write Professional the following diet, I can't. I have to wait until the next November.

And if I fail anything?

Another whole year.

For someone actively trying to build a career and progress with ICAN, that is a serious restriction.
When you even want to write the exam, where's the time to prepare for the exam, attend classes and all?

Surely, after hearing all this, you would expect the salary to be something serious.

₦120,000.

One hundred and twenty thousand of the highest donation.

And apparently, the salary can increase when he sees that I'm "serious and disciplined enough."

Oga, after 8am–10pm, Monday to Saturday, compulsory accommodation, limited ICAN attempts and potentially coming in on Sundays because "everyone else does it"…

Maybe I'm being unreasonable, but I don't think every opportunity is automatically a good opportunity just because someone is offering you a job.

It is not Emegha's fault that Nicolas Jackson didn't take his chances when he had them.

It's also not Emegha's fault that Jackson chose to go on loan to Bayern. At the time, the competition he was walking away from was essentially Liam Delap and João Pedro, two strikers who, like Jackson when Chelsea signed him, arrived without an established pedigree at the very highest level. Jackson chose to leave and back himself elsewhere.

And if Chelsea have now moved on from him, I don't see how the club can be blamed either. They wanted him to stay, he chose to leave, and by his own admission, "the plane doesn't turn back." Decisions have consequences. He made his choice, and Chelsea were entitled to make theirs.

The important thing is that this doesn't even require Emegha to already be better than Jackson.

Jackson got his opportunity at Chelsea. Delap has had his opportunity. João Pedro got his opportunity and took it. Now, if Chelsea believe Emegha deserves his, then give him the same chance to prove what he can do.

Maybe Emegha succeeds, maybe he doesn't. That's football. But dismissing him as "shit" or automatically worse than Jackson before he's even had his opportunity is dumb (I am not sorry).

Jackson was once the relatively unproven striker Chelsea decided to take a chance on too.

Now it's Emegha's turn.
