“Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.”
- Søren Kierkegaard. From his journal,
1843.
We often spend our lives searching for certainty before certainty is even possible. We want to know which direction is right before taking the first step, which relationships will last before giving our trust, and which dreams will prove worthy of the time we devote to them. Life rarely gives us those guarantees in advance.
Only in hindsight do seemingly disconnected experiences begin to make sense. A disappointment that once felt pointless may later reveal itself as a turning point. A closed door can redirect us toward an opportunity we never expected. Even mistakes can gain meaning when we honestly consider what they taught us. Looking backward allows us to connect experiences that originally appeared as unrelated pieces.
Yet understanding the past does not mean we should continue living in it. The past can teach us, but it cannot become our permanent home. Constantly reopening an old wound may help us understand how it happened while preventing it from fully healing. Reflection matters most when the lessons we uncover improve the life still ahead of us.
We therefore have to move forward without knowing everything. Uncertainty is not a flaw in life; it is part of what it means to live. Courage does not require knowing exactly what comes next. It means continuing to make thoughtful choices even when the outcome remains unclear.
The road often becomes understandable only after we have traveled it. We move forward first and recognize the pattern later. What feels confusing or uncertain today may eventually become the experience that makes everything before it easier to understand.
Kierkegaard expressed this idea in his journal in 1843, observing that although life can only be fully understood by looking backward, it must ultimately be lived moving forward.

@GovAbbott@TxDPS These PEOPLE were human beings who were murdered, including a nine year old boy. Their immigration status in this country is irrelevant. @GovAbbott continues to demonstrate his disdain for Black and Brown people. SHAME ON YOU!!!
#TwitterTakeover So... here's the problem folks. Elon was a great CEO for companies that sold cars and payment services. Those are products. He's failing at a company where the 'product' is human relationships. Clearly, he is horrible at human relationships.
I know I have been off of social media for awhile now, mainly been due to wanting to care for my mental health. That said, I am about to end my time on Twitter. Elon Musk has proven to be an incompetent, politically-biased, maniacle oligarch. He has/will destroy this platform.
@ChristianWalk1r The hardest thing for an adult child to do is acknowledge a parent's lies and abuse. Good for you for standing up for yourself and speaking the truth. This is the first day of your healing journey.Peace and blessings!
There was another time in history when women of color were forced to have children: the enslavement of African-Americans in this country. This country was NEVER about protecting the rights, health, life, or citizenship of Black Women. Please VOTE!
@Simone_Biles You are a brilliant, amazing, beautiful young woman! You ARE the GREATEST of all time! Thank you for taking care of yourself and showing all Black women and girls that it is essential to protect our mental, emotional, and physical health. YOU ARE LOVED❤️!
@YonPom Hello! Thank you for your report on Baltimore City Public Schools. Our correct abbreviation is BCPSS (Baltimore City Public School System). BCPS is Baltimore County Public Schools. Dr. Williams is the CEO of Baltimore County Public Schools, not Baltimore City.

Q3: Thankfully, I teach CS at a mostly African American, all girls charter school in MD. Every day I teach CS to nearly 100 students. My district hires contract instructors to teach CS in its schools because of the lack of CS teachers.
