The workers united will never be defeated 🚩
This May Day we Marched with our comrades from the SFI, PCE, KKE and Indian Workers Association. Today, we highlight the importance of international working class solidarity, celebrate our victories and prepare for the fight ahead ✊
Members from across @yclbritain
have been collaborating over the past months, building a new version of Back to Basics, the YCL's primer on all fundamental Marxist-Leninist concepts and theory.
While we wait for physical copies to be printed, we are excited to share this online version on the Challenge website for free.
We would once more like to thank all of the members who contributed to this text and proudly hold their efforts up as exemplary of our movement.

SFI UK’s Edinburgh Subcommittee addressed the march in solidarity with Palestine organised by the Edinburgh Gaza Genocide Emergency Committee. It was addressed on behalf of the organisation by Comrade Abhinav, a member of the SFI Edinburgh Subcommittee.
The anti-war movement needs a wake-up call.
As Al-Qaeda in Syria, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), terrorists backed by NATO storm the Syrian capital we are reminded of the images of a destroyed Iraq and Libya, the images of a nation destroyed by terrorism and slavery, and the failure of the anti-war movement to build an alternative to US imperialism. This failure to present an alternative to the one-sided goal of ‘toppling of a dictator’, is not a new one, it echoes the interventions in Libya and Iraq, which led to the establishment of the Islamic State and constant civil war – the constant self-destruction of national sovereignty exploited by the United States to extract raw materials and perpetuate Zionist and imperialist geo-political aims across the world.
As left-wing organisations once again link arms with Western governments in congratulating the achievement of United States foreign policy aims, the anti-war movement needs a wake-up call.
So-called progressive forces continue to back NATO foreign policy interests in the region and fail to provide meaningful actions that oppose it. In 2012, the CIA began operation “Timber Sycamore” to train the Syrian opposition, and many of the weapons provided by the CIA ended up in the hands of HTS fighters. The British state via Conflict, Stability and Security Fund (CSSF) funded the Syrian opposition to a tune of £215 million in 13 different projects, noting in a report that these projects: “coincided with the… resurgence of Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham’s [sic], an al-Qaeda affiliated group, in Idlib”. Most of the Syrian opposition groups who are funded by the British Defence ministry remain a secret. However, it is known that the British state funded the HTS-affiliates: Harakat al-Hazm and Jaish al-Islam.
Today is a victory for the military interests of the United States and United Kingdom, as Keir Starmer welcomes the collapse of the Bashar Al-Assad government, and by extension a victory for the imperialist interests of the current Israeli government. The anti-war movement failed to provide meaningful opposition to these Western state operations, and instead, ‘progressive’ movements have joined together with the calls of Western intelligence services for the collapse of the Assad government. The North-Eastern Kurdish region faces attacks from jihadist ethno-nationalist forces that now overrun the rest of Syria, the anti-war movement in Britain needs to re-analyse its position before a similar fate of destruction falls on the rest of the Middle East. As with Libya and Iraq, and now Syria, we cannot in 10 years’ time recognise the horror that has fallen on a country and fail to reevaluate our strategy while another country is targeted.
Solidarity with NEU @NEUnion Sixth Form College Members! #PayUp24
The Education Advisory of the Communist Party stands in full solidarity with the strike action across 32 sixth form colleges.
The overwhelming 97% vote for industrial action powerfully demonstrates the strength of feeling within the sector and provides a powerful mandate to the strikers highlighting the urgent need for fair funding for our education system.
We urge the government to listen to the concerns of educators and to negotiate a fair pay settlement as a matter of urgency.
We call on all workers to support the NEU's strike action.
Solidarity!

Over the past decade, there has been an alarming rise in the rate of violence against women and girls in Britain. According to the National Police Chiefs’ Council, in England and Wales alone, between 2018 to 2023 there has been a 37% increase in violent crime against women and girls, constituting 20% of all crimes documented by the police. However, this does not account for all violence against women and girls, as many incidents go unreported to the police.
Migrant women in Britain are often housed in abysmal and unsafe conditions, discriminated against by services in place to report assault, and often this violence goes unreported despite migrant women facing a higher risk of sex-based violence, including domestic violence, sexual violence, and trafficking.
In recent years, an increase in harmful patriarchal rhetoric and normalisation of sexual exploitation has accelerated with the rise of misogynistic influencers and online pornography with easy access for young men and boys. Women are now paying the price of this widespread sexism as the College of Policing calls violence against women and girls a national emergency. This ideological backlash against women and girls is fundamental to capitalism to drive division between the working class, ensuring the super-exploitation of women for capitalism’s gain. This extends to the institutionalisation of sexism in the police and the British state, with a considerable number of police officers being charged with rape and indecent assault.
We know that women in Britain should not accept life as it is under capitalism as we look to our sisters in socialist countries, such as Cuba where gender equality is an essential component of the Revolution. Compared to Britain’s dictatorship of the bourgeoisie, Cuba is a dictatorship of the proletariat, meaning that women in Cuba are guaranteed greater participation in politics, science, education and employment. This participation at every level of society means that violence against women and girls in Cuba is tackled, for example, women are less likely to be financially trapped in abusive relationships.
The YCL has a vital role in tackling violence against women and girls on the basis of building the class struggle in Britain because we recognise the role that capitalism has in our poverty and misery. Our Congress Resolution calls for the abolishment of pornography and online sex work platforms that economically coerce young women and girls, as well as combatting the propagation of traditional roles and normalisation of sexual exploitation on social media.
On Saturday 7th December, the YCL and Communist Party’s joint Women’s Conference will address how to tackle violence against women and girls from grassroots organisers to build the class struggle in Britain for women’s emancipation.

To mark the 16 days of Activism for the elimination of violence against women and girls, we will be highlighting some of the vital ways in which women have been part of the global struggle against capitalism, imperialism and patriarchy.
Our first piece centres on the women of Algeria during the struggle for freedom from colonial French rule, including key figures like Djamila Bouhired.

Last week, the EIJB released their Report on Edinburgh's Safer Consumption Facilities and the (lack of) progress that has been made.
Nearly a year after our campaign forced the delayed report to be released, and further drug deaths in 2024, we continue to see further delays.
The nearby Braidwood Community Centre (named after James Braidwood the first Fire Master) was closed by #Edinburgh Council & given to Edinburgh Uni for £1.
Public space becomes private space.
They plan the same for our working class museum.

On Monday night, members of the CPB and the YCL attended the memorial of Sitaram Yechury, legendary parliamentarian and leader of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), at the Marx Memorial Library.
Afterwards the League hosted a joint public discussion between London YCL comrades and Mayukh Biswas and Nikhil Mathew, respectively the General Secretary and the UK secretary of the Student Federation of India, a progressive students organisation with over 4 million members worldwide.
The comrades discussed the political situation in India, the issues faced by Indian students in Britain today, and how our two organisations might collaborate further in our shared struggle against capitalism and US imperialism.
The GS commended the YCL and the Party for our continued work in solidarity with the Palestinian people, and the meeting was concluded with a declaration of joint commitment to the SFI's slogan of Independence, Democracy and Socialism!🚩💪
