@janetfontanet@s8mb And that’s before all the extra costs that are borne by consumers through other parts of the system.
Extra transmission and distribution build to connect diffuse renewables to the grid, balancing costs to manage the intermittency, backup for periods of no wind or sun.
@janetfontanet@s8mb No, because almost all of those incremental kWhs are more expensive than the gas-fuelled equivalent.
Wind is either subsidised by ROCs on top of the wholesale price (set by gas), meaning it’s always more expensive, or receives a CfD subsidy up to a fixed price higher than gas
@Mike_Sammon@LibDems They are literally saying it’s nothing to do with pricing structure or gas.
They’re saying the 35% of the bill that pays for wholesale electricity (the bit ‘set by gas’) could DISAPPEAR and bills would STILL RISE.
The levies pay for renewables.
Renewables are the problem.
@WildonGrange@iainmartin1 Nuclear or hydro. You need high inertia on the grid, which is provided by huge chunks of metal spinning at thousands of RPM in conventional generators.
Wind and solar do not add inertia to the system, as they produce DC current. You need to pay more to create synthetic inertia.
@melanie_onn Please read this thread with an open mind. It is all evidenced and based on fact.
Energy costs are far too important for you to ignore the truth.

The Government is pushing the narrative that renewables are cheap and gas is the problem. It's been 18 months since my last thread showed this to be a lie.
Have things changed? Or is Ed Miliband driving us towards ruin? 🧵
@melanie_onn You know these numbers are completely false.
The average cost of electricity last year - which you say is set by gas - was £72.
All renewables on the system received ROC subsidies ON TOP of that, meaning they’re more expensive, or are locked into CfD subsidies at HIGHER prices.
@Ianbarnes2001@mr_james_c@ClaireCoutinho Sorry, this is just not true. The government’s own impact assessment says the scheme is funded by a levy on bills and expanding it will increase the average energy bill by £15. Why are you lying?

@meganekenyon Those are projections which don’t match the evidence of CfD auctions - and that doesn’t even count the extra hidden costs of backup, balancing, grid expansion.
Please read @LoftusSteve thread, and the work of Oxford Climate Economist Prof @Dieter_Helm.

It’s beyond ironic that our base on Diego Garcia is at the heart of the biggest geopolitical calculation for years *immediately* after Labour have gifted sovereignty to a Chinese ally👇
Remember this: Farage was willing to miss his GB News show for his holidays, getting paid to speak at foreign cryptocurrency conferences and on countless USA trips.
He wasn’t - however - willing to miss the show for yesterday’s debate and vote.

@meganekenyon Seriously, please take time to read the thread and understand it. There is so much misinformation out there and our journalists really need to be doing a better job at understanding how the electricity system works.
@meganekenyon This is categorically untrue.
As Steve shows here, with evidence, all renewables currently operating are more expensive than the average wholesale price, which is mostly set by gas.
We are subsidising them by £billions. How can they be doing anything other than add to prices?
