grew older, i learned that the key to surviving the day is not positivity. it's acceptance. accepting that not all days are good and happy. you will have bad days. you make mistakes. you fail. you mess up. everything’s not going to fall into place and that is completely okay
True power comes when you realize that you shape your identity through repetition and systematic habits. Our experiences form our thinking and our existence.
So if you are in miserable shape, eating poorly, watching Netflix all day, setting goals you never reach, and telling yourself "I can't do this, I'm too weak, I have no discipline" these are all signs that your identity is weak. You don't have control over yourself.
The highest form of intelligence is recognizing this miserable state and having the strength to stop.
Stop losing yourself in self-pity. Start asking yourself what you can change today to change your future.
And act ruthlessly to build momentum.
This sentence by Dostoyevsky never fails to hit hard:
“You sensed that you should be following a different path, a more ambitious one, you felt that you were destined for other things but you had no idea how to achieve them and in your misery you began to hate everything around you.”
This is “The Thoughts Behind the Unthinkable,” a talk I gave about my mental health experience.
