My experience reading Sentimental Education after mention by BAP was to be repeatedly shocked by the freedom and superior quality of life enjoyed in the 19th century, even among the poorer characters.

Free association by public happenstance with important people; education and work presenting a much clearer path to immediate worthwhile results, and yet much more unmanaged and forgiving to those off of "success pipelines"; limited money being spent on gifts and idiosyncratic ambitions rather than overpriced necessities.

And of course the sexual licentiousness of characters reminds that pre-sexual revolution times were not prudish and repressed; if anything the revolution was one of both prudishness and anti-romanticism.

Darwin said the whole point of everything is just getting baddies, but BAP qualifies the statement: that's only true in a fully owned society. You can imagine the impulse a kid has playing Minecraft or Call of Duty, to create civilization, compete, and go to war… but you may stop playing those games once you’re old enough to truly internalize that they are fake.

But imagine a world where those activities are real and have real rewards — sexual conquest is but one of many ambitions. That requires anything else left to win, and we do not have it. (In many ways we do not have sexual conquest anymore either and as such we have Pandafication.)

Baudrillard says we have Disneyworld to hide the fact that the rest of the country is just as fake. Video games serve same purpose I think.

Really it’s the opposite of what fearmongering child "advocates" say: it’s not that young kids will be violent in real life because they are violent in their games, but that they will be violent in games because they first think like it is real life.

Social media has homogenized but only within types. Those whose nature and status fit the mold of certain experiences are channelled to them through transparent feedback loops of nurture.

Many extroverted, hierarchical and beautiful youths seek SEC or Big10 greek life, which have many similarities, but SEC is more explicitly intertwined with familial status, and Big10 is more cosmopolitan, and with more expectation of moving to big shitty after college.

That said, greek life types at all major party schools (contrary to resentful nerd narratives) have elevated expectation compared to typical college students of meeting their spouse before they graduate.

I agree and expect this has something to do with their artistic tastelessness. The other extreme, good taste, is out of their reach, since it requires either a consensus (which today does not exist) or subtle incremental growth through artistic traditions, so only the extreme of kitsch ensnares them.

Resentful leftists thoroughly erased all common knowledge of classes and kinds of people, in favor of the obvious fiction of “equality.” Leaving just a person's resume to determine whether they are fit to lead.

If everyone is supposedly equal, then of course all the work should be done BEFORE getting the job, and overkill of box checking is required, because there’s no other way to distinguish yourself as deserving. What is the benefit of all that experience?

All the while, the quick and effortless solution, judgment of a person’s type, is also the more accurate and valuable method. Any important skills can easily be learned on the job.

The left wants a system where worth is proven by “experience” rather than genuine talent and virtue.

(This goes for politics and for any kind of modern employment.)

Much like many Americans assumed the Prefect system and School Houses were a magical invention of JK Rowling, and not a reality of British schools, many have been duped into thinking the virtue and heroics in King Arthur stories, for example, are magical fantasy ideas rather than a reality throughout history.

It’s assumed all leaders must and even SHOULD be sniveling, resentful Obama types, that power corrupts, and that it would be impossible to have rule by the Good and the Great… so much so that when such a rule occurs, the ruler is hated.
