Our work on pigeon beaks is out in @CurrentBiology today. Thanks to @Lisa_M_Potter for putting together this fun video showing off our fabulous research subjects!
A team @UUtah biologists led by @ef_boer and @MikeDShapiro discovered that a #mutation in the ROR2 gene is linked to beak size reduction in numerous breeds of domestic #pigeons. Surprisingly, mutations in ROR2 also underlie a human disorder called Robinow syndrome.@CurrentBiology
“The time has come to dispose of the terms “model” and “non-model” systems and adopt instead the more accurate term “research organism”. Our remarkable advances in genome editing, imaging, bioinformatics, high throughput assays and automation demands it.”

It's my pleasure to share the video I made for the SDB John Doctor Education Prize! It describes the brown anole as an emerging model species.

Did you notice? The Session Chairs at #2020SDB were not only senior scientists but also junior faculty, postdocs, & grad students. This a great action to create an inclusive organization. This is 1 of many reasons why @___SDB___ is my favorite science society.
@EvoDevoPanAm @amjeve Both are good choices! First is an Old Dutch Capuchine... pretty cool but the English Trumpeter is the clear choice with its giant feathered feet. Even Darwin loved them!
@MadS100tist @___SDB___ @Dev_Bio_Journal @MikeDShapiro Thanks Joaquin! So honored to be in a session with all these fabulous scientists and beautiful organisms!
@UCSDCooperLab Not swinging, just making my voice heard! These things are important these days :) Adi’s work is so cool, can’t wait to see what else comes of it!
Such a cool and exciting talk from @UCSDCooperLab about gene expression changes associated with elongated jerboa legs! For the record, I voted for fuzzy little dinosaurs!
