Cumulative case for theism thread, highlighting its explanatory power across many domains of human existence. 🧵
Theism provides
a unified explanation for:
The fact that moral realism is even debated — that there’s a vast literature in “metaethics” in which it’s disputed whether (e.g.) torturing babies for fun is wrong regardless of what anyone thinks — is a testament to the utter oddness of our socio-cultural situation.
An illusion requires a conscious subject. That’s why consciousness could not possibly be an illusion: if you’re subject to illusions, then you’re conscious.
@MrCasey62 Holiness does consist in doing the same few things repeatedly though. Prayer, Fasting, Eucharist, Scripture Reading, Singing, Acts of Kindness, Virtue, Following the will of God, self-denial etc.
@nematophy@AStrasser116 Do you think the average human person commenting on holy scripture has a spirit filled reply, expounding the truth of them? Because if yes, then the tool seems unnecessary, as you can just see the meaning for yourself by the holy spirit. If no, then the tool seems dangerous.
@jcamachott@InspiringPhilos@AnaKasparian That is not my point, my point is that our needs have not changed, and will not change, because we do not change, in who we are (that is, human beings).
You need to be very careful when you tell yourself you're going to do something, no matter how minor or trivial, because if you don't do it, now the dam has been broken, now you can't even really trust yourself, and if you can't trust yourself who can you trust, who can trust you
@jcamachott@InspiringPhilos@AnaKasparian But the psychological and social needs of human beings don’t change. We are the same beings we have been since we were created. We need love, and food, and shelter, and security, and peace, and hope, and faith, and justice and community and mutual understanding and compassion…
I asked a high school teacher friend about the biggest change in teens over the past decade. His answer was interesting. He said whereas the 'default state' of teenage psychology used to be boredom, now it was anxiety.
@CardioLeo Exactly. And humility is a divine gift. Whereas pride is quite natural to man. Inasmuch as man abandons God then, there will be more divisions and pride in society, and the glue that binds us together will melt.
I'm completely serious in asking: What inspiring centuries-long project could unite the largest % of the world, so that their joint pursuit of it could unite them & give deep meaning to all their lives?
Are you surprised that God, who loves good people very much and who wants them to be as good and noble as possible, puts them in situations that can train them?
— Seneca
@CardioLeo It’s clear only God could do such a thing, because of our own accord we want others to agree with ourselves and are most reluctant to accept the views of others, especially in religious matters.
Our people falling into nihilism due to a lack of philosophical and religious education is a bigger problem than being uneducated in science and mathematics.
