A lot of people have made this point but it bears repeating - there is a distinct difference between crossing an ocean with the idea of building something new, and getting an airline ticket and jumping into a society that will coddle you. This distinction is lost in all this ‘we are a nation of immigrants’ stuff.

Action is the cure for most of your problems:

– Acknowledge what happened: mourn it, celebrate what was, then move on
– Get your "gear back on" immediately, don't wait for the feeling to pass
– Take action fast, the longer adversity sits unchallenged in your head, the stronger it gets
– The action doesn't have to be massive, just forward movement
– Do a quick analysis: why did it go wrong, what gate do I need to jump through next time
– Then go execute that next step

Much larger numbers of young Americans need to study and work abroad - go through the tedious bureaucracy of getting visas/work permits/proof of health insurance - so they understand in their bones how absurd it is that we just allow anyone to come here with no process at all.
