@LauraClarkeUK @UKinNZ@FCDOGovUK Thanks for all your work and collaboration during your tenure here - you'll be missed! but best wishes for your new chapter. I look forward to following from afar
3/3 Despite the outcome we do want to acknowledge the hard work of negotiators over the last four years. This negotiation was always going to be difficult because of entrenched and out of touch EU protectionism.
1/3 The EU/NZ FTA outcome is extremely disappointing. An 8 fold increase for beef access, as is being reported, doesn’t tell the whole story. @NZBeefLamb

2/3 The starting point was a 846MT (PW) beef quota and while the FTA results in a 10,000MT(CWE) beef quota, the sector has averaged +7000MT (PW) to the EU over the last 5 yrs so this will barely cover existing trade and does not provide for future growth.
“The history and evolution of our sector is a rich and interesting story…Here’s the great stories of our industry and here’s to looking forward to the many stories that we are yet to tell.” - Esther Guy-Meakin (@eguymeakin) from the Meat Industry Association.
@HoneyBeeGeek It also doesn’t allow for any future growth and the only accounts for 0.1% of EU consumption. This outcome maintains small quotas that will continue to constrain our companies’ ability to export to the EU.
@HoneyBeeGeek This doesnt tell the whole story. The starting point was a 846MT(PW) beef quota & we have filled it every year paying considerable tariffs for product outside this quota. Over the last 5yrs exports have averaged +7000MT a yr to the EU so 10,000MT(CWE) barely covers existing trade
MIA CEO @sirma_karapeeva says halal products generate $3.7B in annual export earnings but the sector is facing a critical shortage. A sustainable solution is urgently

In working with the Meat Industry Association, we've published our biannual "Barriers to International Trade" report which scopes the tariff and non-tariff barriers that the sector faces and sets out the context for the sector’s global trade. Report: https://t.co/ie2LWluOK4
Meet the team behind the world’s first breed of low methane sheep. It’s a terrific story, straight out of Mosgiel, and we can’t wait to see the programme roll out nationwide in the coming years.
I'm back! Second day back at work after maternity leave & second day in my new role as Senior Manager Strategy, Trade Policy and Advocacy at the Meat Industry Association. I'm thrilled to be starting back in this new role & to still be working with the New Zealand meat industry

@CraigKendricknz @gwynncompton We need to do both - our sector exports to more than 120 markets around the world. Diversification of markets is key to the sector's strategy and has been a key part of our resilience through e.g. the challenges of COVID-19.
Deeply disappointing to see a lack of quality & ambition in leaked details of the EU agriculture market access offer to NZ. This is a time for leadership on trade & the EU should back up their recent statements on importance of trade w/ ambitious outcomes

@CraigKendricknz @gwynncompton its true that multi-party negotiations are more complex than w/ single partners but they also deliver significant strategic benefits. CPTPP is an e.g. of a hugely complex negotiation but big wins for the sector & strategic regional economic integration. We need both kinds of FTAs
