One life lost is far too many.

Local humanitarians remain the backbone of humanitarian operations around the world. Yet, they are also the ones who bear the overwhelming brunt of violence and loss.

In 2025 alone, 18 volunteers and staff of our National Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies were killed while carrying out their lifesaving work in Gaza, in Sudan, in South Sudan, in Iran, in Ethiopia and in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

Violence against humanitarian workers must stop.

Today, @IFRC Secretary General @jagan_chapagain hosted The "Beat the Heat Together" event @COP29_AZ, highlighting the urgent action on extreme heat.

More than 490,000 people die annually from heat-related causes. And unless we act, that number could rise fivefold by 2050. At the @IFRC, we aim to protect 100 million people across 100 cities and 10,000 communities by 2030.

We can no longer afford to look away. Extreme heat is here, and it’s deadly. Join us, and let’s beat the heat together. #COP29
