Huge congratulations to @DemisHassabis and John Jumper on being awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for protein structure prediction with #AlphaFold, along with David Baker for computational protein design.
This is a monumental achievement for AI, for computational biology, and science itself. 🧬
Excited to share this story now in @NatureComms where we investigate the molecular mechanisms behind the evolution of enhanced metabolic "addiction" between microbial partners in a synthetic community. https://t.co/xKCI1SYZfF Many thanks to @sourjik for an amazing time in Marburg
Our paper on the experimental evolution of microbial mutualism is now published in @NatureComms Congratulations @G_Scarinci !
Enhanced metabolic entanglement emerges during the evolution of an interkingdom microbial community https://t.co/9Jfxavbk6R
The winning design!
17 people from 8 countries submitted 27 entries for the BLAST XVIII meeting logo contest, including faculty, students, postdocs, and research staff. Dr. Lori Burrows' design (McMaster University) was selected as this years winner! Congratulations.
Excited to share our latest publication on the ParABS system @PNASNews@bacterialOrder@mpi_marburg@IMPRS_Mic! We've quantified and characterised the behavior of ParA, an ATPase that oscillates within cells. (1/6)
My grandfather built motors that powered big machines. In a lab not so different from his workshop, my colleagues and I uncovered the assembly of the bacterial motor. Today, this discovery has been published in @NatureMicrobiol#MolecularNodes#Discovery https://t.co/m98Df1DuOr
Happy and super excited to share our discovery of a protein fractal! We unravel the surprisingly simple emergence of these marvellous structures and show it might have even been an accident of evolution. Read the full story here

Or just stick around 🧵
And here is another preprint. Ira's work shows that bacterial investment of resources in the costly motile behaviour is ruled by physics: https://t.co/InNXaLcXhH
Happy to share Giovanni's new preprint on experimental evolution of a synthetic microbial community. Surprisingly fast emergence of a novel dependence between partners on nitrogen assimilation.

This PRX Life study shows a new way that microbes self-organize! By swimming in circles near the surface in a fluid, motile #bacteria create spatial patterns that organize non-motile bacteria into non-equilibrium spatial structures.

Happy to see my colleague and friend @SilviaEsB's PhD work published! Her research provides exciting insights into how bacterial communities actively organize themselves. Congratulations Silvia! 🥳🔬
Excited to share my first author paper, "Active Density Pattern Formation in Bacterial Binary Mixtures," now published in @PRX_Life! https://t.co/GWolJMDVJ7
After a long break, we went to the IMPRS retreat again! Our senior doctoral researchers presented their research, discussed career path options and had an opportunity to network with peers, former members of our program and guests from industry.
Our retreat is back to life after lockdown. This time in Castle Rauischholzhausen close to Marburg. Two days of great presentations and intense discussions, and a nice hike!
The MPI for Terrestrial Microbiology is on Twitter now! We are really excited to join the community. Feel free to follow us for the latest news, events and research activities.
Stay tuned for more updates in the next days!
