Anna Vorenkamp just started PhD on bar-tailed #godwits in #WaddenSea with @RoelandBom at @NIOZwdrc. Her work is part of #WAAKVOGELS project @Waddenfonds with fieldwork on #Griend. Today she met a male ringed 26 years ago at Schiermonnikoog, Anne being at least 2 years younger!
In the new paper @GlobalChangeBio we show how climate change caused homogenisation of the onset of spring might soon dillute previously isolated Arctic-breeding bird populations

🐦🧨Tot een afstand van 10 kilometer hebben #vogels last van het massaal afsteken van #vuurwerk zoals tijdens #oudennieuw.

We explore how temperature homogenization may remove isolation of 2 populations of bar-tailed #godwits with potential loss of population structure due to #climatechange in new paper in
@GlobalChangeBio: https://t.co/TOGiH6T80u !based on snow-cover satellite images & tracked birds
About 11 years -one sun activity cycle- after we published the hypothesis in @IBIS_journal based on catches of #ruff, there is big follow-up study in @PNASNews that sunspot activity, or 'bad space weather', negatively affects bird #migration. https://t.co/k0Xh6FUtI5 #OpenAccess
The global shift in H5 avian influenza viruses among wild birds has really changed the ecology. Europe now both a sink and a source for H5. Bidirectional spread of viruses between europe and asia. Global collaboration crucial https://t.co/tOvx7fW07Z
1/3 We have 2 exciting academic positions still open: assist. or assoc. prof working on (1) climate change impacts on ecological systems and (2) land cover & land use dynamics. Join us - Depart. of Theoretical & Computational Ecology @IBED_UvA@UvA_Science? Closing data 31/1/23
120 positions for Ukrainian researchers in Europe and almost any research organization can become a host, including us at the University of Amsterdam. If you work in birds / ecology / modelling send me a message.

Have you thought of combining animal/bird tracking with virology? Join our @pdpc21@ErasmusMC@IBED_UvA project as a PhD student to explore whether humans more likely to get mosquito transmitted diseases in the near future. https://t.co/OuuUvW9vfa. @GlobalFlyway@biologging
Are you in the UK and know a researcher from Ukraine/Russia? Try getting them out of this hell. The programme below is opening for Russian researchers too. https://t.co/A8iOBkFNxQ
Because solid scientific publications tend to be so easily forgotten, here is reminder of mass of relevant long-term information on #migration changes in bar-tailed #godwits that Eldar Rakhimberdiev subjected to scrutiny in a single unified stats analysis. https://t.co/VmeKSEiiVf
We are hiring a machine learning engineer for ecological and environmental research. This is unique opportunity to combine your ML expertise and interest in ecology and nature. https://t.co/qpojL1mcd4 @IBED_UvA@BaranesJudy
@eldarrak et al show w/ simulations that misidentification due to tag misreads generate bias in survival estimated w/ capture-recapture. Using multiple id within a season, you can now correct for this issue 💯

@eveconnection@GlobalFlyway@MethodsEcolEvol Sure, all the working code is here: https://t.co/d2EixEmlxj. I will write an easy intro soon, but let me know if you need help before that.
1/5 Do you have capture-recapture data where misidentification is possible? Then your estimates of survival probability are very likely to be incorrect. Check out our new MEE paper. https://t.co/J0kh2AjJC2 @GlobalFlyway@MethodsEcolEvol
Long-term observations on bird populations help find ecological correlates of vital statistics. However, with time, markers suffer wear & discoloration, so that misidentifications creep in. A teething inference problem! Our paper developing fix is now published @MethodsEcolEvol
5/5 We urge researchers and practitioners to use the JAGS coded RDM models provided in the paper to verify already published estimates of probability of survival.
4/5 We developed a new class of capture-recapture – Robust Design Misidentification aware (RDM) capture-reencounter models, that directly estimate misidentification probability and provide unbiased estimated of survival and reencounter probabilities.
