Gone from being excited for my modules next year to worrying if they'll be taking place. Apparently Humanities aren't important anymore.
@UniofExeter#universityofexeter
Guess what? I’m at risk of redundancy. My job - and those of my colleagues in my department and across our wider faculty of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences - is one of those currently targeted for cuts. I received a personal letter today. https://t.co/dLgmiSir0c
Can’t get my head around the gall of a decision to drastically reduce your spending on a student cohort’s education and charge them the same amount for it. It’s used car salesman logic.
Don't forget the crucial info that these redundancies / gutting of the Humanities and the 8th top English department in the country (and reason Exeter achieved its Russell Group status) are NOT FOR A FINANCIAL RATIONALE.
Posting this again.

@UniofExeter cannot justify these cuts being made. It is outrageous to be cutting down HASS in this way. We will not stand for it and we will support our lecturers.

@annaperryparis They reduced the offer and shouldn’t have - pure greed. As a former state school student myself, however, I know that there’s often no connection between A level grades and ability. I snuck away to work but many from my school were brilliant and couldn’t. And we got little help.
@CerasellaChis@EHChalus Voluntary redundancies lead to compulsory redundancies. It is the process. After 2O+ years in academia I heard a VC ( of one of the ‘wealthiest’ non Oxbridge unis) make these same tropes. They will have target areas & numbers. Humanities seems a likely target. Very depressing.
The study of humanities depends on universities.
Job training does not depend on universities.
So to abandon the former for the latter is to make universities superfluous.
Exactly the timeline of the #UniversityofExeter Consistently said “No compulsory redundancies” And now 500 colleagues have been told they’re at risk of compulsory redundancy.
@DrAllyLouks It is utterly horrifying and so deeply short-sighted. Thanks for drawing attention to the petition. As an alumna, you can also co-sign this petition set up specifically for alumni: https://t.co/sVFcIbPWfi
It’s heartening to see so much righteous fury from across the political spectrum rain down on Exeter University (@UniofExeter) for their cutthroat assault on education. Entirely deserved. I hope the reputational damage clearly being done makes them think twice.
One thing that a lot of international observers probably don’t understand about the UK higher education crisis is that, in the main, it isn’t due to declining student numbers. Departments face cuts even when growing their student numbers.
“These cuts represent an existential threat to humanities and social science disciplines at Exeter: if they go ahead, student experience will suffer enormously, and both teaching programmes and research culture will be damaged beyond repair.”

Explanation from Exeter University is not showing up on X. Links suggestions please. Could there be more students with fewer staff ? Is there an online strategy or is the real estate cost base seen as fixed? Anything on @youtube ? @UniofExeter
Thread🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥To the people who are hoping to make me and over 100 of my colleagues redundant: please read these posts by my ace colleague Prof Susannah Cornwall. THIS is the why the humanities are vital 💪#DefendExeterUni
@becimay We saved jobs at Liverpool being axed under similar terrible logic by going on indefinite strike and shaming management. Idk what your branch is like but if possible I'd ballot asap then simply refuse to start the new term. You're a well known uni people would pay attention.
