The part I can’t get past is what Smit Machchhar did after he was stabbed.

He was bleeding, the aircraft had just gone into a terrifying plunge, and somehow he kept fighting long enough for passengers and crew to get into that cockpit and overpower the other pilot. Two additional flydubai pilots aboard eventually took control and landed the plane safely in Saudi Arabia.

Everybody made it.

Think about who was sitting behind Machchhar. Most of those passengers weren’t his countrymen. They were simply 174 people who had gotten on his airplane and trusted him to get them home.

When everything went wrong, that was enough.

There will be investigations and plenty more to learn about exactly what happened aboard FZ1073. But 174 people walked off that airplane alive.

The captain’s name is Smit Machchhar.

Remember it.

Pictured below was 32 year old Paul Benedetti who was an assistant director at the Aon Corporation in the South Tower. His wife said that one of his talents was his wonderful sense of humor in which he was even able to find something funny coming down the stairs after the 1993 World Trade Center bombing, he could imitate all the characters from The Simpsons and had set up the office software to sound like Homer Simpson saying doh when somebody made a mistake. To forget even a single one of these people is a blasphemy!

Pictured below was 51 year old Stephen Belson who died along with Battalion Chief Orio Palmer in the South Tower. Belson had been a firefighter for 28 years and had gotten a college degree in physical education. Prior to becoming a firefighter he had been a lifeguard and eventually moved to my hometown of Rockaway where many firefighters lived and they named a beach there after him following 9/11. On that day he was on light duty because he was recovering from spinal surgery and was assigned to drive Palmer around. They raced to the towers and it was noted that Belson was very good friends with Father Mychal Judge who was also killed on that day and had been the chaplain of the fire department. To forget even a single one of these people is a blasphemy!

Pictured below was 30 year old Debbie Bellows who was an executive assistant at eSpeed which was a subsidiary of Cantor Fitzgerald in the North Tower. She left behind her husband who said that she was a very caring and loving person who affected so many others and that she had many friends where she worked. I was also informed by one of her cousins that she was pregnant when she died. To forget even a single one of these people is a blasphemy!
