@hyjw2009@Thetwistedrqx Who is this? A member of the family? A Garo fan? A stupid moron probably invested in conspiracy theoriesโฆnonetheless shouldnโt he be reported to authorities?
[Fake News Trap] When Views Beat the Truth: The Reality of the โCyber Wreckerโ Economy
A growing number of celebrity-related allegation videos are spreading rapidly through YouTube and online communities. Profit-driven fake news has evolved from a problem affecting individual stars into a broader issue involving the advertising market and the responsibility of digital platforms.
Office worker Park Yoon-jung (45) says she began repeatedly seeing videos about actor Kim Soo-hyun in her YouTube recommendations. The titles contained words such as โshock,โ โexposรฉ,โ and โtruth.โ
โAt first I didnโt believe them, but when similar videos kept appearing, I started wondering if something had really happened.โ
The algorithm amplified suspicion, and that suspicion generated views. According to the article, the Kim Soo-hyun controversy was not merely a celebrity private-life scandalโit became an example of how profit-driven fake news can affect both an individual actor and the entertainment industry as a whole.
An Era Where Allegations Generate Revenue
The controversy began in March 2025 when the family of the late actress Kim Sae-ron, through the organization Garosero Research Institute, claimed that Kim Sae-ron had dated Kim Soo-hyun for six years beginning when she was 15 years old.
The article states that channel operator Kim Se-ui subsequently released what were presented as KakaoTalk conversations and audio recordings, further fueling the allegations.
According to the article, investigators later concluded that much of the evidence presented had been fabricated using AI technology. It says Kim Se-ui was arrested on five alleged charges, including spreading false information, attempted coercion, threats, and violations of South Koreaโs anti-stalking law, and is currently awaiting trial.
The article argues that celebrities are particularly attractive targets because public curiosity drives clicks, and clicks translate into advertising revenue, influence, and donations. The typical formula is:
Present sensational allegations as an โexclusive exposรฉ.โ
Attract public attention.
Convert attention into views.
Turn views into revenue.
Meanwhile, the person targeted often spends months attempting to clear their name, while corrections and rebuttals rarely spread as widely as the original accusations.
Damage Beyond the Individual Celebrity
The article emphasizes that the impact extends far beyond a single actor.
A celebrityโs image is directly tied to economic value, affecting:
Advertising contracts
Brand reputation
Casting decisions
Agency credibility
Because companies often seek to avoid risk, business consequences can occur before allegations are proven true or false.
The article notes that Kim Soo-hyun and his agency became involved in legal disputes reportedly worth tens of billions of won after the allegations emerged. Some advertisers allegedly sought contract termination, repayment of model fees, and penalties.
Increasing Accountability for False Information
The article reports that the South Korean government is discussing stronger measures against disinformation.
According to the report, proposed regulatory changes would allow individuals or entities that intentionally spread false information and cause harm to face liability of up to five times the amount of damages if they meet certain audience thresholds, such as:
More than 100,000 subscribers, or
More than 100,000 average monthly views.
The proposal would also allow fines of up to โฉ1 billion (about US$700,000) for repeatedly distributing information that has already been legally determined to be false.
Major platforms such as Naverโ , Kakaoโ , Googleโ , and Metaโ are also reportedly being considered for obligations related to reporting systems and content-management policies.
