Different plant species require different types of soil, so growing all plants in the same bagged soil wouldn’t be successful. In class, we started with a base soil then had to add ingredients to adjust things like pH and water retention for our radishes. @franklinlorax#apesland
A lot of the plants that are in my house need different things to grow. For example, one of these plants grows best with clay pebbles that improve permeability. Others use potting soil with humus to give the plants nutrients! @franklinlorax#apesland
This is a Christmas Cactus! The makeup of our soils can make or break products it helps create. The ideal pH of the soil for this plant should be 5.5 to 6.2. Also, as you can see, there is much humus in the soil which helps create a nutrient filled soil. #apesland@franklinlorax
GMO’s that allow for more crops to grow that people like. But they also cause long term health effects that are uncertain. You can tell when something has no GMO’s when it it has the USDA ORGANIC circle on it like these thyme leaves. #apespop@franklinlorax
@franklinlorax#apespop my car- a mercedes benz gla, is fuel efficient and even has a eco mode for me to save gas, and not have the engine run when it’s not necessary. This car will help me in the long run to decrease my ecological footprint!
My mom drives a Honda CRV which is a pretty fuel efficient car, averaging about 28 miles per gallon. With the population growing everyday, limiting our gasoline consumption would is great for lowering our ecological footprint and keep resources available @franklinlorax#apespop
#apeseco@franklinlorax this is my dog duke. Duke is a k selected species who was nurtured by his family at a young age. He also lives as apart of a large population while still having an individual community. He’s very popular!
In the ecology unit we’ve learned how organisms are part of communities, but also are in an individual population. Humans are their own population but they also coexist with other species in the temperate seasonal forest. #apeseco@franklinlorax
This is my dog Auggie! Dogs are great examples of K-strategists which means that they value quality over quantity. K-strategists often produce fewer offspring but value protecting and caring for them greatly, this keeps their population low. #apeseco@franklinlorax
During the APES field trip the class saw a glacier lake. This is a body of water that originates from a glacier. It typically forms at the foot of a glacier, on, in, or under it. As Earth's climate warms, the world's glaciers are shrinking creating lakes like these! #apeswater
Due to the production of plastic, lots of this waste ends up in our oceans. A well known example of this is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch. To help stop this issue, I like to use a reusable water bottle rather than multiple plastic water bottles a day. @franklinlorax#apeswater
At the Conservancy for Healing and Heritage, rain picks up many organic materials like leaves and even pet feces. This runoff travels down the hill and into the water. The excess organic material can cause BOD to increase leading DO to decrease @franklinlorax#apeswater
