The perfect job is a lie: here's why

At some point in the 16th century…

The Spanish conquistadors heard about the legend of ‘El Dorado’ - a city hidden in the jungles of South America, supposedly made of solid gold.

They’d spend the next 100 years hacking their way through the rainforests of Colombia, Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana, suffering all manner of disease & death…

… all for something that never existed in the first place.

And to top it off?

On the way, they discovered a metal that looked like dirty silver.

They called it “platina” - literally ‘little silver’ in Spanish.

What they’d found was ‘platinum’, a rare metal far more valuable than gold, yet they thought it was worthless, and threw it away.

Oh the irony.

I tell you this story because the wild goose chase for El Dorado - to me - sums up people’s experience looking for the ‘perfect job’.

Years, sometimes decades down the drain, passing up the treasure right in front of them, all for something that’s no more real than a city of gold.

Today, I’d like to break down why.

🤷‍♂️ The best jobs are only good 70% of the time.

I heard this somewhere and I love this advice. No matter where you go, you can’t escape the hard parts of human nature at work.

Setting boundaries with your boss and dealing with colleagues aren’t things you can avoid - they’re skills you need to learn.

📷  You get paid for a reason

The more you want to get paid, the more value you have to bring, which means taking on more responsibility, more stress, working longer or harder, or doing more tasks you’d rather not be doing.

🔁  Skill comes before satisfaction

A @ProfCalNewport quote I love:

‘We shouldn’t expect a good working life until we’re good at a skill.’

In other words, setting out to find an amazing job is putting the cart before the horse. You have to become amazing at what you do first. Once you're good at what you do, passion will follow.

=> You like things you're good at. So, to like your job or industry more, get better at it.

😰  Your ‘perfect job’ is a tough job

Most of us agree that a quote unquote “perfect job” would be one that helps us grow as a person, both emotionally and skills-wise.

But how do we grow?

=> By overcoming challenges and being thrown in at the deep end.

So in a weird way, a perfect job - by definition - is one that’ll push you out of your comfort zone, and yes, make you feel a little inadequate at times.

Think about that. A ‘perfect job’ is going to be hard and stressful sometimes. That's what makes it perfect.

This means:

- ‘Relaxing’ in an easy job is actually one of the worst ways to spend your career (if you're career driven).

- the job you’re at right now could very well be that ‘perfect’ job.

Well, hopefully those tips give you some things to think about. I struggled with the ‘grass is greener’ in my career, and still do sometimes.
