Vaccines have granted families in wealthy countries the luxury of forgetting what measles, polio, rubella, and other preventable diseases are like.
We're looking at how many millions of lives vaccines have saved.

Boston has installed CO, CO2 and particulate matter sensors in 4436 classrooms to monitor indoor air quality in real time. Measurements are freely available at https://t.co/qTf81QAqOA. A tremendous effort in transparency. Other similar initiatives: https://t.co/JA1RvPaXQ1
People often take clean water for granted, but it hasn't always been this way. In the 19th century, pioneers like John Snow and Louis Pasteur uncovered the link between cholera and contaminated water. At that time, people didn’t hesitate to take action, building large-scale, modern water infrastructure to protect public health. Today, we enjoy clean water as a given, but it’s the result of a long history of effort and innovation.
However, a similar story is unfolding now. Scientists have identified the connection between polluted air and a variety of airborne diseases, but unlike the efforts made with water, we aren't investing in the same kind of infrastructure to ensure clean air. Why aren't we taking similar action to safeguard our health from air pollution?
When dairy cows in Texas began falling ill with H5N1, alarmed veterinarians expected a fierce response to contain an outbreak with pandemic-sparking potential. Then politics—and, critics say, a key agency’s mandate to protect dairy-industry revenues—intervened.

This week in key Covid publications:
—Young, healthy individuals with mild cases had objective cognitive deficits at 1-year that they did not perceive
—Older, hospitalized adults with severe Covid had an equivalent of 20 years of decline in cognitive performance at 1-year follow-up
—A nasal vaccine (2 doses) blocked infections for at least 3 months and was effective across 10 different variants
—Reinfections increase the risk of #LongCovid
—mRNA shots don't induce long-lived plasma cells, but we don't know if this is true with other vaccine platforms

Schools and daycares are the main source of respiratory bugs every winter (and beyond). Imagine if we could eliminate a huge portion of illness with better ventilation. Whatever it costs will easily be paid back with by reduced illness, hospital use, sick days.
