This is a disturbing reflection of how degrading our society can become.

Imagine holding a cane and publicly flogging civil servants, not behind closed doors, but in full view of everyone. What exactly are we trying to achieve with such humiliation?

Imagine being a son or daughter and watching someone flog your mother or father like a child. Or watching your partner being subjected to such treatment.

There should be better and more dignified ways to enforce discipline and conduct verification exercises. Civil servants are human beings deserving of basic dignity and respect.

Honestly, even animals should not be treated with such needless cruelty.

In 2005, 23 secondary school students were arrested at the University of Lagos for writing semester examinations for undergraduates who had hired them.

Most were caught because they did not have the new identity cards the university had just issued to students. When challenged, they claimed they had forgotten them at home.

A senior police officer told Daily Sun that examination malpractice was becoming increasingly common and called for tougher measures.

By the time of the report, nine of those arrested had been charged with conspiracy, altering, forgery and impersonation. They were granted ₦100,000 bail, which most could not afford, leaving them remanded in prison.

"We won't get tired of prosecuting them until they get tired of cheating," the police officer said.
