Meet Uganda- the African country that built an AI that speaks 31 African languages.
While much of the world is talking about ChatGPT, Gemini, and other global AI models, Uganda has quietly built something remarkable.
Meet Sunflower, a Large Language Model (LLM) developed by Kampala-based non-profit Sunbird AI and officially launched in October 2025 in partnership with Uganda's Ministry of ICT and National Guidance.
Sunflower understands 31+ Ugandan languages and dialects, helping make AI more accessible to farmers, students, small businesses, and millions of people who aren't fluent in English.
Even more impressive, it was trained on digitised school materials, local literature, and hundreds of hours of Ugandan radio programmes, giving it a deeper understanding of local languages and culture.
This is bigger than language.
It's proof that Africa isn't just adopting artificial intelligence. Africa is building it, for Africans.
Would you use an AI that speaks your local language? What impact do you think language-inclusive AI could have across Africa?

Imagine a world where doctors no longer have to ask, "What's your blood type?" before saving your life.
That's the future Japan is working towards.
Researchers are developing an artificial blood substitute that could one day be transfused into any patient, regardless of blood type.
The technology, known as Hemoglobin Vesicles (HbVs), is currently undergoing human clinical trials, bringing medicine one step closer to a universal blood substitute.
Why does this matter?
In emergencies; whether it's a road accident, a complicated surgery, or a natural disaster time is everything. Finding compatible blood can delay treatment, especially when supplies are limited or patients have rare blood types.
If proven safe and effective, this technology could:
โข Reduce the need for blood-type matching.
โข Extend the shelf life of life-saving blood supplies.
โข Improve emergency response during disasters and conflicts.
โข Help hospitals manage blood shortages more effectively.
It's important to note that this is not yet a replacement for donated blood. The technology remains in clinical trials, and more research is needed before it can be introduced into everyday healthcare.
Still, it's a powerful reminder of how biotechnology continues to push the boundaries of what's possible.
If successful, could universal artificial blood become one of the biggest medical breakthroughs of our generation?

Nigerians are going through so much in this country...

"While growing up, when itโs time to pray for Nigeria, I was always at the forefront praying. But I later realized I was fโ รธling myself. As long as you tell me to pray while there is somebody elected and being paid to do the job, prayer alone is not enough. How can you tell Nigerians to pray when someone is being paid to do the job?"
โ KokoPee replies Minister of Defence, CG Christopher Musa (Rtd), over his recent call for Nigerians to remain prayerful.
