@KaitlynGroves7 Totally agree! Even though I barely listen to the radio anymore and stick to streaming services, on some occasions I do listen and that is when I may hear a new song/artist that I've never heard! In that case, it's important to showcase Canadian artists.

@Mark_king45 I agree! For new artists to get big and go "viral" it can be difficult but being played on the radio could be the push someone needs to garner attention.

#MUS2011W21 Even after all this time I feel the quota is still necessary as new artists and songs are constantly being released. It would be a shame to see Canadian artists lost in the plethora of American music. It is important to support local music!
@bonin_jake Totally agree with your thought on "celebrity culture". A lot of people are dedicated to their favourite artists/bands and listen to everything they release, which then leads to them developing into people's favourite songs. #MUS2011W21
@annieskinnerr I agree with your point! I think the genre being performed live matters. I would not want to hear covers of today's pop music but I do love live covers of songs from the 70s-90s! #MUS2011W21
I agree with Wald's statement. Most of today's audience would rather hear their favourite song digitally than a live cover of it. This is because people's favourite songs, in addition to being enjoyable, are important due to who performs them. #MUS2011W21
@RachelLegge5#MUS2011W21 Yes! I wonder how many people think that Boone's covers, which were originally by black artists, are the original song? How many black artists in this period are forgotten and replaced with the white artists that stole from them?
@CoryJon37320730#MUS2011W21 I agree! While covers can provide a new sound to a preexisting song, most of these "schlock" artists only use these songs as a way to make easy money while taking away the authenticity of the original song.
"Schlock" music shouldn't be dismissed but we should acknowledge that its success is attributed to the black artists that originally created the music that was covered or performed. Would these artists be as successful if they had to write and produce their own music?

@ryanlegerclarke#MUS2011W21 Never thought about this! It's interesting to think about how every little embellishment is completely unique. There are probably moments in the studio where he sang something with a break and might have not been able to recreate it, making it all the more special.
@eahiscock Kanye West's use of "I've Got a Woman" is excellent! It's interesting that while the song originally describes how amazing and wonderful Ray's woman is, while Kanye uses it in a completely different context and changes the meaning.

Ray Charles' technique of breaking in his voice, specifically in "I've Got A Woman", helps to convey true passion and desire for the woman he wrote this song for. In doing so, he creates a unique timbre, especially for that time period.

@EmmaRandell5 Totally agree with your point about AirPods! These days, having them is the equivalent of having MP3s when they were first introduced. I'm sure within a few years they'll be less novel and won't be associated with being of a higher social class.
@KaitlynGroves7 Excellent point! Streaming services are able to give a voice to artists who would probably be suppressed on the radio due to their gender, race, sexuality, etc. It definitely provides more exposure to music that would not even make it on the radio.

The switch from listening to the radio to streaming services allows people to find music that personally suits their ideas and identity, rather than be "fed" music from popular media that may not fit in with who they are.

@HilaryHennesse4 I see so many people (including people that are about to work in the public health system) share racist things regarding the virus and it makes me so mad. Being racist about this is 1) bigoted and uneducated but 2) creates fear and spreads false information about the virus.
I hate when people that experience a menstrual cycle don't get their health taken seriously because "it could be your period" or "is it that time of the month?". Especially when it comes to mental health, people like to assume it's because you're on your period.

@annav_edwards Those weight loss ads on Instagram make me so uncomfortable, I can't imagine being a young teenager seeing that and feeling like you have to have "the perfect body". Not only that but a lot of these slim tummy teas and stuff are not FDA approved and are very dangerous.
It's promoting unhealthy weight loss since many doctors are speaking out against the "hacks" to lose weight. Not only that it's promoting weight = health when that isn't the case. Young people shouldn't be made to feel like they have to lose weight to be attractive.

Recently while scrolling through Tik Tok I've noticed an abundance of "weight loss hacks" and "how to lose weight fast" videos. It's extremely gross to see since a lot of the audience on Tik Tok are young teenagers.
