@EmmaRandell5#MUS2011W21 I also respect the notion of having a quota of CanCon however, with the advancements of music streaming, a lot more people simply listen to whatever they want, whenever they want. Less people are listening to the radio where many Canadian artists are featured.
@KaceyHutton4#MUS2011W21 That's a great point Kacey! A lot of talented Canadian artists have made a name for themselves on the international stage such as Bryan Adams, Avril Lavigne, and Shawn Mendes. They have the motivation, drive, and determination to be successful in the music industry.
#MUS2011W21 I think the concept of recognizing and supporting Canadian artists/music is important, but this quota of Canadian content doesn't seem fully essential. Platforms such as Spotify or Youtube are accessible worldwide and less people are tuning in to listen to the radio.
@RachelLegge5#MUS2011W21 This is a great way of looking at Wald's assessment Rachel! Attending concerts and live performances at coffeehouses allows everyone to bond over their shared love for various types of music. Listening to records just doesn't deliver the same overall experience.
@EmmaRandell5#MUS2011W21 That's an excellent point Emma! Having the ability to be able to listen to any artist through various streaming platforms is a definite advantage. However, attending a live concert gives you a whole new appreciation for how hard the artist worked to create this music.
#MUS2011W21 I don't fully agree with Wald's assessment. Today's pop audience enjoy dancing to live music because there is a sense of community among the crowd. The sound experience is much different than listening to records. However today's technology boosts the overall quality.
@edevilla15#MUS2011W21 "Schlock rock" was indeed a way to illustrate these "clean" covers of popular rock songs. These white middle-class teen idols were trying to make rock and roll "safe" as well as "unthreatening." Sometimes artists make cover versions of songs as a tribute.
@maeghan2002#MUS2011W21 You make an excellent point Maeghan! Little Richard's "Tutti Frutti" was covered by Pat Boone, but Boone's version outsold the original. Lots of artists these days make covers of songs to learn different styles of music, but original artists should be given praise.
#MUS2011W21 Artists such as Pat Boone produced "Schlock rock" music and covers of R&B classics to cater to a more conservative audience. However, many of these white middle-class teen idols have been guilty of cultural theft and outsold even more than the original artists.
@edevilla15#MUS2011W21 This is a very good point Elizabeth! From listening to his music, you can tell he wasn't afraid to break the boundaries with regards to integrating different genres. Ray Charles timbre was very recognizable and unforgettable which contributed to much of his success.
@laura_ings#MUS2011W21 This is very true and really highlights Ray Charles dedication to create his own, unique sound. He was one of the most influential artists and has continued to inspire artists for many decades. He put his heart and soul into his music and you can truly hear it.
#MUS2011W21 Ray Charles used a breaking voice to convey his affection to a woman who supports him in many cases. 1950's R&B-Gospel consisted of highly emotional vocals and exclamations ("oh yeah"). I had no idea Kanye West's "Gold Digger" includes samples of "I've Got a Woman."
@_emilymorrissey#MUS2011W21 Listening technology has really come a long way with regards to being available to everyone regardless of a person's gender or social class/status. Streaming services such as Spotify are very affordable and users are exposed to millions of different genres/artists.
@jillldoyle#MUS2011W21 Streaming Services such as Spotify provide users with an endless amount of music in multiple different genres. Playlists created by my friends are great ways to discover new artists. Spotify also provides users with playlists they may enjoy based on past selections.
#MUS2011W21 Years ago, I owned an iPod Classic and would extract music from various CDs to store on my iPod. Nowadays, there are many music streaming services such as Spotify where users simply pay a monthly subscription and have access to music of all genres.
