@olivianedd7800 @psyc220 Exactly! There is so much need for mental health support in low SES communities. Unfortunately, with how expensive private therapy is, there are so few options.
#CD7 @psyc220 In the future, I would like to have some experience being a school counselor. These positions are often only available in areas and school systems with a higher SES district wide. This only further isolates marginalized (mental health wise) identities who… (1)
@hickeymaggie1 @psyc220 It can be really hard to avoid bias in counseling sessions especially if you yourself have struggled with mental illness. It’s important to remember everyone’s uniqueness and unique experiences. #cd7
@egglestonsk23 @psyc220 Completely agree! Children are most exposed to values within the home and it is a point of origin for experiencing oppression. Being conscious of this and making an effort to be accepting is of huge importance for parents! #cd7
Within district funding, the guidance counselor has the choice of where to apply and I do feel that (while it may lead to lower salary) the most to gain from the job would be to work at schools with a population of students with low SES.
Do not have access to mental health counselors within their school system. Private therapy is technically a luxury given it’s expense and often times students of low SES can not afford private sessions leaving their only option to be a school counselor. While it is an issue… (2)
@egglestonsk23 @psyc220 #CD6 I had never heard the story but it's kind of inspiring to hear. There is so much that she has dealt with (in terms of oppression) in her life. Albanism in minorities is rarely talked about but it's impact on the marginalized can be huge.
@KatelynPSYC220 @psyc220 #CD6 This is an excellent point. It seems like both are working against each other in terms of the lack of professional opportunities that sexual minorities receive (gender bias in the workplace, sexism) and the necessity of having a stable job to improve SES.
@psyc220 #CD6 The intersectionality between socioeconomic status and marginalization of mental health is one that is largely overlooked. Both seem to hinder each other from progressing as mental health issues can arise and lead to one losing their job/inability to work and... (1)
@psyc220 ... low SES means very few options in terms of finding help or support to deal with mental health issues (paying for therapy, medications, etc.). There is a lack of compassion for mental health in many workplaces and there is also the notion that seeking help for... (2)
@psyc220 #CD5a 1) I know housing off campus isn’t technically part of JMU but copper beech housing requires being able to go up stairs in most if not all units which makes it nearly impossible to access if you were in a wheelchair or not physically able to use stairs
@psyc220 #CD5a 2) inspiration porn is found in practically all schools to be honest. I don’t think I’ve been in a school building that didn’t have one of these posters. It’s just not an acceptable way to preach equality, most often it just singles people out.
@sdulaney08 @psyc220 #CD5b I completely agree. I think it’s just furthering that divide by separating out those with disabilities rather than promoting an environment “for all”. I don’t think I would be very receptive to that message if it were directed at me.
#cd4 @psyc220 Feminism is the fight for equality among all genders (not just men and women) and involves “leveling the playing field” in terms of pay, access to education, access to employment, ability to get promoted, etc. Everyone knows both men and women and … (1/2)
