Much gets made out of Nazi occupation of countries like Poland for the human rights abuses they committed there, and I’m not going to downplay that reality. But we often forget that most of Eastern Europe that was under Soviet occupation welcomed the Germans as liberators.

Soviet rule was so horrific that they would rather live under national socialism than communism. That ought to make us reflect on the simplistic post-war morality that would have us believe that the Allies were pure good and the Axis were pure evil. As with most conflicts in history, things were far more nuanced.
